SoftBank’s $50B SB Energy IPO Data Centre Gamble Pressured by OpenAI’s Delayed IPO; Nvidia Guarantees $105B for Ohio Campus
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • SoftBank’s $50bn SB Energy data centre IPO is under pressure as OpenAI delays its own listing, creating uncertainty for Masayoshi Son’s sweeping AI infrastructure bet. SB Energy, which has yet to bring a single facility online, aims to IPO within weeks. Nvidia agreed to provide $105bn guarantee for Ohio project’s initial phase; both OpenAI and Nvidia will own significant stakes in listed SB Energy. Article states: “OpenAI’s valuation has a significant effect on SoftBank’s own value and balance sheet.” OpenAI delayed IPO valued at $1.2tn is in early talks for private funding round.
  • SB Energy has $439bn in contracted future revenue backlog (mostly data centre capacity) but zero operational facilities yet, with $357bn of revenue only “expected to be recognised” from 2034 onwards. Ohio campus will deliver 8GW capacity by 2032 (vs Meta’s 5GW in Louisiana). SoftBank committed $60bn+ to OpenAI; OpenAI is tenant on Ohio and Texas SB Energy sites. The company faces $170bn+ capex requirement to build contracted facilities. Recent $138.7mn revenue (mostly solar) and $551.6mn operating loss show scale gap between current state and future commitments.
  • Financing risk is significant: SB Energy IPO targets $5bn-$7bn raise while SoftBank maintains majority stake; company needs additional $7bn+ on top of IPO to fund 10% equity stake in projects. Remainder requires debt and future project cash generation. Investor concerns about customer concentration (OpenAI dependency) and valuation feasibility; some investors say $50bn “might be tough to hit.” MST Financial analyst David Gibson calls it “rich given the concentration.” Yet bankers average $50bn as reasonable valuation.
  • Success hinges on OpenAI’s continued performance and investor appetite for Son’s AI infrastructure thesis. CoreWeave (crypto miner-turned-cloud provider) IPO’d March 2025 at similar $50bn market cap despite inexperience concerns; market cap has since doubled amid relentless AI computing demand. Longterm SoftBank investor sees SB Energy as “another gamble on Masa…You have to remember that he has always been successful in the face of cynicism.” If SB Energy IPO succeeds, it lifts SoftBank’s net asset value and increases Son’s borrowing capacity for future AI ventures.

What Happened?

SoftBank’s SB Energy data centre subsidiary is preparing IPO at $50bn target valuation, but OpenAI’s delayed IPO is pressuring timing and investor confidence. SB Energy aims to IPO within weeks; expects to raise $5bn-$7bn while SoftBank maintains majority stake. SB Energy has $439bn in contracted future revenue (8.8GW data centre capacity) but zero operational facilities; $357bn of revenue only “expected” from 2034 onwards. Ohio campus targets 8GW by 2032 (vs Meta’s 5GW in Louisiana). Nvidia guarantees $105bn for Ohio initial phase; both Nvidia and OpenAI will own significant stakes. SB Energy needs $170bn+ capex; has $138.7mn revenue and $551.6mn operating loss in H1 2026. OpenAI is tenant on Ohio and Texas sites; SoftBank committed $60bn+ to OpenAI.

Why It Matters?

For SoftBank shareholders, SB Energy IPO success directly lifts net asset value and increases Son’s borrowing capacity for future investments. For Nvidia shareholders, the $105bn guarantee and significant stake in SB Energy expose NVDA to OpenAI’s performance and data centre demand durability. For Microsoft shareholders, OpenAI’s delayed IPO creates uncertainty for SoftBank’s strategy, which could impact OpenAI’s own valuation (and thus MSFT’s stake value). For enterprise AI customers, SB Energy’s massive capex bet validates sustained AI computing demand thesis—but zero operational facilities create execution risk. For investors evaluating Son’s AI gamble, SB Energy IPO is test of whether markets will fund massive speculative capex bets with no current revenue.

What’s Next?

Monitor SB Energy IPO timeline; if OpenAI completes IPO or confirms valuation, it could de-risk SB Energy and accelerate its listing. Track SB Energy’s pre-IPO investor meetings; if institutional investors express confidence, $50bn valuation could hold. Watch Nvidia’s earnings guidance for data centre demand; if NVDA signals sustained AI computing growth, it validates SB Energy’s $439bn contract backlog assumptions. Monitor SoftBank’s balance sheet impact from OpenAI stake changes; if OpenAI’s valuation increases, it lifts SoftBank’s net asset value materially. Track CoreWeave’s market performance post-IPO; if CWEB sustains $50bn+ valuation, it validates comparable SB Energy valuation. Also watch for project financing announcements; if SB Energy announces debt/equity raises for specific campuses, it would signal construction confidence and execution progress.

Affected Tickers & Coins: 9984 (SoftBank Group), NVDA, MSFT, META, CWEB
