- The S and P 500 traded up 1.3% at 12:45 p.m. in New York, its biggest intraday gain in over a month, with 10 of 11 industry groups advancing. The Nasdaq 100 rose 2.5% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average 0.7%.
- Crude fell to $95 a barrel, dropping below $100, after US Central Command reported flows through the Strait of Hormuz at a six-month high and Trump said he would be willing to meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week.
- Meta was the largest single contributor to the S and P advance on optimism about its Muse AI product. Vital Knowledge founder Adam Crisafulli said Muse is more CPU-intensive than other AI technologies, which drove a rally in Intel. Traders had turned negative on tech Friday after The Wall Street Journal reported Anthropic would delay its IPO to November.
- Paramount Skydance settled with California and other states suing to block its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, and shares of both companies gained at least 9%. Bitcoin traded above $84,000 near an eight-month high, lifting Strategy, MARA Holdings and Coinbase.
What Happened?
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called weekend meetings with Chinese trade negotiator Li Chenggang very successful, ahead of the leaders summit this week. JPMorgan strategists led by Mislav Matejka expect continued short-term volatility from the Iran war and a seasonally difficult September, but wrote that October should bring markets back in line with fundamentals and that the supportive setup persists. Ulrike Hoffmann-Burchardi, chief investment officer of global equities at UBS Global Wealth Management, told Bloomberg TV that growth and the equity market are resilient enough that 50 or even 75 basis points of tightening will not derail the rally. Chicago Federal Reserve President Austan Goolsbee said restoring price stability will not be painless and that the central bank should not ignore persistent shocks. Citigroup chief executive Jane Fraser said Sunday that companies are racing to build defences as advanced AI models raise cyber attack risk. Accenture rose after agreeing to safety test Anthropic models, and Critical Metals climbed after Trump announced a Greenland security agreement with Denmark. US and Canadian fertilizer shares fell after Trump said the US is working on a potash deal with Belarus.
Why It Matters?
The rally is being attributed to an AI app, and the larger force is the oil price. Crude falling to $95 from above $107 earlier in the month unwinds a substantial part of the war risk premium, and the reason is concrete rather than sentimental: Hormuz flows at a six-month high mean physical supply is moving. That single fact does more for the inflation outlook, and therefore for equity valuations, than app download rankings. Attributing the move primarily to Muse risks mispricing what is actually driving it, because an oil-led rally reverses the moment the Strait data or the diplomatic posture changes. The tech round trip is the second point. Shares fell Friday on the Anthropic IPO delay and rallied Monday on Muse, which is the same sector moving sharply in both directions on corporate news within two sessions, and that is a market trading headlines rather than earnings. There is a contradiction sitting in plain sight as well: Fraser warned that advanced AI raises cyber attack risk on the same day AI exposure led the market higher, and the cost of the defences she describes falls on the same companies buying the technology. For allocators the Hoffmann-Burchardi claim is the one to interrogate, since arguing that 75 basis points will not derail the rally assumes earnings growth continues, and that assumption has not yet been tested against a full tightening cycle.
What Next?
This week carries a dense calendar: manufacturing PMI on Wednesday, initial jobless claims on Thursday and the University of Michigan sentiment and inflation expectations survey on Friday, with a Chicago Fed activity index due Monday. The Trump and Xi summit is the largest scheduled event, and Bessent characterisation of the preparatory meetings sets a high bar for the outcome. Watch Hormuz flow data closely, because the oil move rests on it and a reversal would undo the rally mechanism regardless of what happens in technology. Whether Trump actually meets Pezeshkian at the General Assembly is the near-term diplomatic marker. On Anthropic, the November IPO timing is now a known date that tech sentiment has already traded against once. The Paramount Skydance settlement with California removes one obstacle to the Warner Bros. Discovery deal, so watch whether remaining state actions follow the same path.
