GE Vernova Bets $9 Billion on Trench Group’s Grid Gear as Orders Nearly Double to $29.3 Billion and Backlog Nears $200 Billion

  • GE Vernova agreed to buy high-voltage equipment maker Trench Group from Triton Partners for $9 billion, funded equally with cash and debt and expected to close in late 2027. Trench’s products are found in most high-voltage direct current lines built globally, and the company is expected to report about $1.4 billion of revenue this year, implying a price of roughly 6.4 times sales (Lumida calculation).
  • The deal landed alongside a blowout quarter. Orders nearly doubled to $29.3 billion, backlog grew about $20 billion sequentially to $197 billion and is expected to top $200 billion this quarter, and revenue jumped 27% to $12.64 billion, ahead of the $11.99 billion Wall Street expected.
  • Management is leaning into the data-center and electrification wave. CEO Scott Strazik pointed to data-center buildouts, electrification projects and manufacturing growth as drivers of demand for high-voltage gear, a market the company estimates will reach $130 billion by the end of the decade, and Trench has signed multiple supply agreements with hyperscalers over the past two years.
  • Shareholders also get more capital returned. The board doubled the buyback authorization to $20 billion from $10 billion, and the company raised its full-year revenue outlook to $46.5 billion to $47.5 billion, from $45.5 billion to $46.5 billion, along with its adjusted Ebitda margin and free cash flow forecasts.

What Happened?

GE Vernova said on Wednesday it will acquire Trench Group, which employs more than 3,000 workers across 11 manufacturing sites in Europe, North America and Asia and serves more than 800 customers. CFO Ken Parks said the deal should immediately boost margins and deliver up to $100 million of annualized cost synergies by 2030. Third-quarter profit rose to $1.29 billion from $453 million a year earlier, and earnings of $4.81 a share beat the $4.03 analysts polled by FactSet expected. The shares initially climbed in premarket trading but later reversed lower, though the stock is still up about 24% this year, according to the WSJ.

Why It Matters?

The deal shows how the AI power crunch is reshaping industrial strategy: the bottleneck is no longer just turbines but the transformers, reactors and switching equipment needed to move electricity to data centers. Buying Trench gives GE Vernova a bigger footprint in product lines where Strazik said it has only a “modest presence today,” and Strazik said it will also help shore up the company’s supply chain. The stock’s reversal after an early gain suggests investors are weighing a large debt-funded purchase and a long wait for closing against a stock that has already gained about 24% this year.

What’s Next?

Investors will watch regulatory reviews ahead of the expected late-2027 close, and whether the backlog crosses $200 billion this quarter as guided. The pace of buybacks under the new $20 billion authorization, and any detail on revenue synergies Parks said could come “over time,” will also be key. For the broader grid supply chain, the price paid for Trench sets a marker for how much strategic buyers will pay for high-voltage capacity.
