- Beats were not enough for some industrial and tech names. Caterpillar slid 9% after adjusted EPS of $7.20 on $20.68 billion revenue topped the $7.08 and $20.55 billion LSEG estimates, because construction industries sales came in slightly below forecasts, while Fortinet plummeted 25.5% as its 79.6% non-GAAP gross margin missed the 80.1% estimate.
- Consumer names with strong guidance rallied. Crocs surged nearly 18% after earnings of $3.69 a share on $1.04 billion revenue beat the $3.31 and $1.00 billion FactSet estimates and it issued stronger current-quarter guidance, and eBay climbed more than 6% as revenue rose 14% to $3.2 billion, gross merchandise volume grew 15% and it raised full-year guidance.
- Norwegian Cruise Line jumped 9.5% premarket, a gain CNBC’s live blog later put at 13%, after adjusted EPS of $1.12 beat the 93-cent consensus and revenue of $2.95 billion topped $2.88 billion. Carvana climbed 8% after beating on revenue and adjusted EBITDA and saying the SEC closed an investigation without enforcement action.
- Harley-Davidson fell 5% as revenue of $964.0 million missed the $1.07 billion StreetAccount estimate, even though adjusted EBITDA of $93.9 million beat. Honeywell Aerospace fell 4% despite raising its pro forma standalone adjusted EPS outlook to $7.85 to $8 and announcing an initial 40-cent quarterly dividend.
What Happened?
These moves came alongside big swings in Alphabet, DoorDash, Instacart, Eli Lilly and Microsoft. Stocks opened lower, with the Nasdaq Composite down 1.4% just after the bell, the S&P 500 off 0.5% and the Dow down 296 points, or 0.6%. CNBC’s live blog said the S&P 500 was heading for its first loss in four days as Alphabet and Caterpillar cracked after earnings.
Why It Matters?
The reactions show how high the bar is. Caterpillar and Fortinet beat headline estimates but were punished for misses in a key segment or metric, while companies that paired beats with stronger guidance, such as Crocs and eBay, were rewarded. For index investors, sharp single-stock moves in heavyweight names are adding volatility to an already uneasy tape.
What’s Next?
Amazon reports after Thursday’s close, with the Street expecting revenue of $202.22 billion and AWS growth of 37.8%, up from 36.8% last quarter, according to FactSet. Investors will watch whether Caterpillar’s construction softness is echoed by other industrials and whether consumer strength at Crocs, eBay and Norwegian holds up in the holiday quarter.
