Zcash Goes Three Times Faster — NU7 Upgrade Cuts Block Times to 25 Seconds on Testnet Before November Mainnet Launch
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • Zcash activated its landmark NU7 network upgrade early Friday, November 6, 2026, at block 3,543,405 (mined at 02:34 UTC). The upgrade implements three major changes: (1) cuts the target time between blocks from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, enabling three times faster private payment confirmations; (2) reduces the computational burden on wallet software by optimizing transaction verification logic; (3) shifts fee allocation, with miners receiving 40% of transaction fees and 60% of fees removed from circulation and recorded in a reserve that will begin funding future block rewards around February 2031. The motivation for faster blocks is straightforward: Zcash is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency where transactions hide the sender, recipient, and amount. Faster block times reduce confirmation latency, making private payments more practical for real-world merchant acceptance, exchange deposits, and cross-chain swaps. A merchant requiring a single confirmation could accept payment in ~25 seconds (average). An exchange requiring three confirmations could reduce expected settlement time from nearly four minutes (~180 seconds) to approximately 75 seconds. This is material for commerce applications. However, the technical execution is complex: shorter block intervals create network propagation challenges, where miners in distant regions receive blocks more slowly and have less time to validate before beginning work on the next block. This results in higher “orphan rates”—blocks mined on competing chains that are eventually discarded by the network. Zakura, Zcash node software developed by Valar Group and Project Tachyon, tested the upgrade on 80 computers spread across 11 regions and found that 3.43% of mined blocks were orphaned under the new 25-second pace, compared to 1.57% at the old 75-second pace. While doubled, the orphan rate remains acceptable for network stability.
  • The NU7 upgrade also reduces computational overhead on wallet software. Zcash wallets must scan the blockchain to identify payments sent to them—a process that scales with network activity. To optimize, NU7 introduces caching: when a transaction first arrives, wallet software performs a full verification check and remembers portions of that check. When the same transaction appears in a block, the wallet can reuse cached results rather than starting verification from scratch. Some checks still run again (those dependent on updated account balances and blockchain history), but overall wallet burden is reduced. Additionally, NU7 imposes limits on how much private transaction activity can fit into each block. Excessive private transactions can force every wallet to do extra work scanning the blockchain. The upgrade’s transaction limits reduce the worst-case daily download burden from 271 megabytes to 169 megabytes according to the upgrade specification. Combined with the faster block cadence (more frequent blocks = more opportunities for transaction inclusion), NU7 estimates capacity for simple private payments could more than double: from approximately three transactions per second to more than six transactions per second. For context, that’s still slower than Bitcoin or Ethereum, but represents meaningful progress for a privacy-first network that must prioritize obfuscation over throughput. The trade-off is deliberate: Zcash sacrifices absolute transaction speed to maintain strong privacy guarantees.
  • The fee structure changes are designed to preserve Zcash’s 21 million coin supply cap while creating mechanisms to incentivize future mining. Under the new model, miners receive 40% of transaction fees directly. The remaining 60% of fees are removed from circulation and recorded in a reserve fund that will begin distributing to block rewards starting in February 2031. This is a deflationary mechanism: instead of fees going entirely to miners or into a development fund, 60% of fees become part of the long-term monetary supply strategy. By feeding the reserve back into block rewards starting in 2031, the protocol preserves mining incentives for decades to come, even after the block reward halving sequence concludes. For miners, the immediate impact is that transaction fee revenue drops to 40% of current levels—a potential headwind. But the long-term protocol support (maintaining mining incentives through 2031 and beyond) is intended to offset that concern. For HODL investors, the fee-to-reserve mechanism is deflationary and supportive of long-term coin appreciation (reducing supply growth). For the broader crypto ecosystem, Zcash’s fee approach is noteworthy: instead of burning fees (like Ethereum’s EIP-1559), Zcash is saving fees for future use, balancing miner incentives with supply management.
  • The NU7 upgrade also retires Sprout, Zcash’s original privacy pool from 2016. As of Friday, approximately 12,224 ZEC became unspendable due to the Sprout pool discontinuation. Co-founder Sean Bowe has outlined a possible recovery mechanism, but none has been formally approved as of the upgrade activation. The unspendable ZEC represents a small supply reduction (~0.07% of the 21 million supply cap) and is unlikely to be material to long-term economics. However, the Sprout retirement is symbolically significant: Zcash is shedding legacy infrastructure in favor of the newer Sapling and Orchard privacy pools, which offer better performance and privacy properties. For the session narrative, NU7 represents a genuine technical upgrade focused on improving real-world utility (faster confirmations, lower wallet overhead, higher transaction capacity) rather than speculative feature additions. This contrasts with the session’s broader AI capex repricing narrative: Zcash is iterating on proven infrastructure to improve practical performance. Whether improved payment speed materializes into actual merchant adoption and transaction volume remains to be seen—the upgrade enables the capability, but does not guarantee adoption.

What Happened?

Zcash activated its NU7 network upgrade early Friday, November 6, 2026, at block 3,543,405 (mined at 02:34 UTC). The upgrade reduces the target block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, reducing the expected time for private payment confirmations to one-third of previous levels. A merchant requiring a single confirmation would receive payment certainty in approximately 25 seconds. An exchange requiring three confirmations would reduce expected settlement time from approximately 180 seconds (three minutes) to approximately 75 seconds. By 04:59 UTC, the network had produced 225 blocks since activation, averaging approximately 39 seconds apart as mining difficulty adjusted toward the 25-second target. The upgrade optimizes wallet software efficiency by caching transaction verification results to reduce computational overhead when transactions are included in blocks. NU7 also limits the maximum private transaction activity per block, reducing worst-case daily wallet download burden from 271 megabytes to 169 megabytes. The upgrade specification estimates private payment capacity could more than double from approximately three transactions per second to more than six. Testing on 80 computers across 11 regions found that 3.43% of blocks were orphaned (discarded due to propagation delays) under the new 25-second pace, compared to 1.57% at 75-second intervals. Fee allocation changes: miners now receive 40% of transaction fees, with 60% removed from circulation and recorded in a reserve fund that will begin distributing to block rewards starting in February 2031. The upgrade retires Sprout, Zcash’s original 2016 privacy pool, rendering approximately 12,224 ZEC unspendable; co-founder Sean Bowe has outlined a possible recovery mechanism, though none has been formally approved.

Why It Matters?

Zcash NU7 represents a technical achievement in scaling privacy-focused cryptocurrency infrastructure without sacrificing privacy guarantees. The upgrade addresses real-world payment use cases: merchants and exchanges require faster confirmations to accept payments reliably. By cutting block time to 25 seconds and doubling estimated transaction capacity, NU7 makes Zcash more practical for commerce, exchange deposits, and cross-chain transfers. The technical execution—managing network propagation delays, optimizing wallet performance, preserving supply cap while restructuring fee allocation—demonstrates mature protocol engineering. However, the session context is critical: NU7 is a utility upgrade for an established privacy network. It is not a speculative AI infrastructure play, not subject to regulatory repricing (Zcash is low on regulatory radars compared to mega-cap platforms), and not dependent on capex cycles or political outcomes. Instead, NU7 exemplifies the distinction between “technical improvement” (Zcash) and “speculative narrative” (Anthropic IPO repricing, Hyperliquid FCM uncertainty). For Zcash holders and the privacy-focused crypto community, NU7 validates ongoing protocol development and improvement. The upgrade does not guarantee adoption—merchants and exchanges must choose to adopt faster Zcash settlement, and regulatory environments may constrain privacy-coin usage—but it demonstrates the network is not stagnant. For the broader session, NU7 offers contrast: while Anthropic valuations are repriced downward due to political uncertainty and ASML capex orders face regulatory risk from data center moratoriums, Zcash is incrementally improving on proven technical fundamentals.

What’s Next?

Monitor Zcash mining metrics over the next 2-4 weeks as difficulty fully adjusts to the 25-second target. If average block time stabilizes around 25-30 seconds, it validates the upgrade’s technical assumptions. If block times deviate significantly (>45 seconds), it suggests network propagation challenges may require further tuning. Track merchant and exchange adoption of NU7’s faster confirmations. If major exchanges (Kraken, Coinbase, Gemini) reduce ZEC settlement times or if merchants begin accepting Zcash payments, it validates real-world utility improvements. Track wallet software updates from providers like Zcash Wallet, Cake Wallet, and others. If wallets quickly upgrade to take advantage of reduced computational overhead, it suggests practical performance improvements are realized. Monitor ZEC token price and trading volume for any market reaction to NU7. Utility improvements should support long-term value, though near-term token performance may be muted if broader crypto sentiment remains weak (as documented in this session). Watch for any issues or concerns raised by miners regarding the fee restructuring (40% to miners, 60% to reserve). If mining profitability declines significantly, major mining pools may redirect hardware to other cryptocurrencies. Monitor the Sprout recovery mechanism discussions. If a recovery path for the 12,224 unspendable ZEC is formalized and approved, it would represent a modest supply return. Finally, track regulatory developments around privacy coins. If jurisdictions impose restrictions on Zcash trading or adoption (consistent with the data center moratoriums and regulatory skepticism documented in this session), it could limit real-world utility gains from NU7.
