Amazon Signs Four Swedish Wind Farm Deals, Nearing 1 Gigawatt of Nordic Power Capacity

Amazon’s $100 Billion Bet: AI Over Retail

  • Amazon signed long-term power purchase agreements with four Swedish wind farms — Boarp, Dållebo, Fågelås (all operational) and Fageråsen (under construction) — developed by Eolus AB and OX2 AB (owned by EQT private equity), adding nearly 200 megawatts to its Swedish portfolio and bringing its total supply in Sweden to nearly 1 gigawatt, enough to power the equivalent of 350,000+ households annually.
  • The deals directly support Amazon’s Nordic data center expansion: the company operates facilities in Eskilstuna, Katrineholm, and Västerås, and said Thursday that “capacity will be added across all three locations” as demand for cloud and AI services grows — with Amazon separately having committed to purchasing 2 million additional Nvidia GPUs for its global data center fleet in 2027 and 2028, on top of 1 million being installed this year.
  • Amazon was already the largest corporate buyer of fossil-free energy in Sweden in 2025; globally it has invested in more than 700 clean energy projects exceeding 40 gigawatts in total capacity, with the European portfolio alone exceeding 260 projects and 10 gigawatts — making Amazon one of the largest private clean energy procurers in the world, driven primarily by data center power demand rather than sustainability goals alone.
  • The power procurement race among hyperscalers — Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Meta — has become a structural feature of the AI investment cycle: data centers require not just capital and chips but guaranteed, long-term, large-scale power supply, and the speed at which companies are locking up wind and solar capacity in Europe reflects how binding the energy constraint has become relative to compute or financing constraints.

What Happened?

Amazon announced Thursday it has signed long-term power purchase agreements with four Swedish wind farms, adding approximately 200 megawatts and bringing its total Swedish clean energy supply to nearly 1 gigawatt. The four farms — Boarp, Dållebo, Fågelås, and Fageråsen — are developed by Eolus AB and OX2 AB. Three are already operational; Fageråsen is under construction. The deals support Amazon’s existing data centers in Eskilstuna, Katrineholm, and Västerås, with Amazon confirming capacity additions at all three sites are planned. Amazon was Sweden’s largest corporate fossil-free energy buyer in 2025.

Why It Matters?

Power is now the binding constraint on AI infrastructure buildout, and Sweden has emerged as a strategic location: stable grid, high renewable penetration, cool climate (reducing cooling costs), and EU regulatory environment. Amazon’s near-1-gigawatt position in Sweden is significant in the context of its 3-million-GPU data center expansion — each GPU cluster requires reliable, large-scale power that cannot be procured on short notice. The broader implication is that hyperscaler energy procurement strategy is now as strategically important as chip procurement strategy, and that European energy markets — particularly Scandinavian wind capacity — are being absorbed by US tech companies at a pace that will have long-term implications for European industrial energy availability and pricing.

What’s Next?

Watch for additional Amazon data center capacity announcements in Sweden tied to these power deals — the 200MW addition likely supports a specific expansion tranche. More broadly, track whether Microsoft and Google respond with comparable Nordic procurement, and whether Scandinavian grid operators begin flagging capacity constraints from hyperscaler demand concentration. The Fageråsen farm completion timeline will be the near-term operational milestone.
