AI Security Breach: How Hackers Stole OpenAI’s Internal Secrets

  • OpenAI has hired Sandhya Devanathan — until recently Meta’s Vice President for India and Southeast Asia — to fill a newly created senior leadership role covering Southeast Asia and Australia, with Devanathan based in Singapore and reporting to Kiran Mani, OpenAI’s Asia-Pacific Managing Director hired in March; she starts in October.
  • The hire reflects concrete commercial traction: Indonesia and the Philippines are already two of OpenAI’s top 10 global markets for ChatGPT usage — a remarkable position for a region often treated as an emerging-market afterthought by US tech companies — and the combined Southeast Asia and Australia population of roughly 600 million represents substantial untapped enterprise and consumer revenue potential.
  • Devanathan’s background at Meta — where she oversaw India and Southeast Asia, two of Meta’s most complex and high-growth markets — gives her direct experience managing the regulatory heterogeneity, language diversity, and digital infrastructure variation that define the region; her appointment signals OpenAI is hiring for operational depth, not just market access.
  • OpenAI has been rapidly building its Asia-Pacific footprint with offices in Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul, Sydney, and New Delhi, and separately hired Prabhjeet Singh from Uber to lead India; the simultaneous hiring of senior regional operators across APAC suggests OpenAI is moving from an exploratory phase to a structured commercial push, with direct enterprise sales and government partnerships as the near-term focus.

What Happened?

OpenAI announced Thursday that Sandhya Devanathan will join the company in October as its senior-most leader across Southeast Asia and Australia. The role is newly created. Devanathan spent years at Meta, most recently as VP overseeing India and Southeast Asia — two of Meta’s most commercially important emerging markets. She will be based in Singapore and report to Kiran Mani, who joined OpenAI as APAC Managing Director in March. OpenAI already operates offices in Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul, Sydney, and New Delhi, and has separately hired Prabhjeet Singh from Uber for its India operations.

Why It Matters?

The fact that Indonesia and the Philippines are already top-10 ChatGPT markets globally is the most underreported data point in this story. It means OpenAI is hiring into demand that already exists, not speculating on future growth — and it means the commercial infrastructure (payment localization, language support, enterprise contracts) needed to monetize that demand is now the priority. Devanathan’s Meta background is specifically relevant because Meta’s Southeast Asia playbook involved navigating fragmented regulatory environments, content moderation disputes with governments, and the challenge of serving markets where English is not the primary language. Those are exactly the challenges OpenAI will face as it moves beyond English-language power users toward mass-market and enterprise deployment in the region.

What’s Next?

Watch for OpenAI government partnership announcements in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Singapore in Q4 2026 — these are typically the first commercial milestones a new regional head pursues to establish credibility and revenue. Also watch whether OpenAI’s APAC hiring pace (Mani in March, Singh for India, Devanathan for SEA/Australia) continues with country-level hires in Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, which would signal a move toward fully localized operations rather than a hub-and-spoke model from Singapore.
