- Russia has deployed new jet-powered Geran drones and Banderol cruise missiles that evade interception more effectively than earlier models, developed and mass-produced within about two years of concept. Both weapons cost roughly $100,000 each, versus more than $2 million for a Tomahawk or comparable Russian cruise missile.

It behaves more like a low-cost cruise missile, with a range of 310 miles and a speed of 385 mph. The Banderol, in operation since January 2026, reaches 590 miles at 370 mph.
- NATO members pledged more than $40 billion over five years for counterdrone capabilities at a recent summit. Western interceptor makers, including Eric Schmidt-backed Merops and software supplier Auterion, are racing to build faster, jet-powered interceptors to keep pace.
What Happened?
Russia’s engineers iterated rapidly on earlier drone designs, combat-tested them, and moved quickly into mass production — a cycle CSIS’s Kateryna Bondar said Western militaries should study rather than underestimate. Ukraine developed one of the first effective jet drones but lacks the production capacity to scale, while the US and NATO are struggling to increase output of systems like Patriot interceptors. Some Russian drones and missiles have entered NATO airspace, either through electronic-warfare error or as deliberate probes of alliance defenses.
Why It Matters?
The economics are the story, not just the technology. A $45,000 Chinese jet engine turning into a $100,000 finished weapon, aimed at systems that cost seven figures to intercept, is an attritional math problem the West is currently losing — defenders typically fire several interceptors per incoming weapon. That cost asymmetry is why Western firms are now racing to build cheap jet-powered interceptors rather than relying on exquisite, expensive systems built for a different era of warfare. The Chinese component dependency also matters beyond this conflict: DroneSec and Ukrainian officials say Russia is critically reliant on Chinese dual-use hardware despite export controls China says it enforces, and Bondar notes that innovations are already crossing between the Russia-Ukraine and US-Iran conflicts via shared military know-how among Russia, Iran and North Korea. For NATO defense budgets, the $40 billion five-year counterdrone pledge is a direct response to this cost curve, and it signals a durable shift in procurement toward volume and affordability rather than exquisite single-unit capability.

Watch whether Western jet-powered interceptor programs from Merops and Auterion reach production speed comparable to Russia’s cycle — RUSI’s Justin Bronk argues the counterdrone problem is not inherently difficult, just one Western militaries aren’t organized for, and has proposed a dedicated multinational NATO counterdrone force using relatively affordable equipment. Glide bombs, which Ukraine has almost no way to intercept, remain a larger near-term threat to Kyiv’s front lines than the drones, according to Bronk. On the supply side, any tightening of enforcement on Chinese dual-use component exports would be the more direct lever against Russia’s production cycle than intercepting finished weapons after the fact.
