A Bond Issued at Par in June Now Trades at 85 Cents, and Jet Fuel Is Why
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • WestJet’s 8% bond maturing in 2031 traded around 85 cents on the dollar, its lowest since issuance in June, down about 3% from Monday and roughly 10 points from the 95 cents it fetched in early October. At that price the coupon alone yields about 9.4%, with the discount to par adding several points more to the return if it pays out.
  • Three pressures are compounding. S&P cited weaker than expected second quarter results, meaningful disruption from an August flight attendant strike expected to affect the third quarter, rising jet fuel prices, and volatile trade negotiations between Canada and the US.
  • The ratings have moved accordingly. S&P cut the airline deeper into junk to B- from B in September, following downgrades from Moody’s and Fitch earlier in the year.
  • The trade dispute shows up physically in the route network. WestJet has cut 10 US-bound routes from Canada this year, which is cross-border capacity withdrawn because the economics no longer support it.

What Happened?

WestJet is Canada’s second-largest carrier and is based in Calgary. The bond has been declining steadily since the start of October.

Why It Matters?

This is the clearest example yet of the energy shock arriving on a corporate balance sheet. Jet fuel tracks distillate, and distillate is where the Gulf disruption has bitten hardest, with US inventories 14% below their five-year average and heating oil among the largest contributors to the September inflation print. Airlines have limited capacity to absorb a sustained fuel move: hedging programmes cover months rather than years, and competitive route pricing restricts how much can be passed to passengers. A bond falling ten points in three weeks is what that constraint looks like in credit. The compounding is what turned difficulty into three downgrades. Fuel costs alone are survivable, a strike alone is survivable, and a trade dispute alone is survivable. Arriving together, with the strike hitting the quarter when the airline most needed earnings, they have produced a rating at B- and a bond priced for genuine doubt. For investors assessing cyclical credit, the lesson is that correlated shocks rather than individual ones are what move ratings. The deterioration from issuance is the cautionary element. A bond sold at par in June trading at 85 cents in October is a four-month round trip, and it should prompt anyone holding recent high-yield paper to ask what the issuing conditions assumed about fuel and trade. Canada’s wider position is unhelpful, with unemployment at 6.5%, the currency at its weakest since April 2025, 50% US levies on Canadian goods and collapsed trade talks. The route cancellations are that dispute made concrete.

What Next?

Third quarter results will show the strike’s effect and whether fuel costs are being recovered in fares. Watch whether oil holds near current levels, since WTI touched $110 intraday before retreating and the fuel input is the dominant variable. Any progress in Canada-US trade negotiations would support cross-border demand and the routes already cut. At 85 cents with an 8% coupon the question for credit investors is whether this is distress or dislocation, and the answer depends almost entirely on fuel.
