American Fuel Prices Are Reaching Kenya’s Foreign Exchange Reserves Through Its Diaspora
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • Remittances to Kenya could decline this year for the first time since 2009. Money sent home reached a record $5.04 billion in 2025, and the first nine months of 2026 slowed 0.2% to $3.77 billion, which at the current monthly pace leaves the full year slightly short of last year’s total.
  • The cause runs through American household budgets. The US accounts for 55% of Kenya’s inward remittances, and KCB Group treasurer Anthony Mulisa noted that when the cost of living rises, the amounts people send home fall. US gasoline is averaging $4.33 a gallon against about $3.08 a year earlier, with motor fuels up 35%.
  • Policy has added to it. A 1% US federal tax on international money transfers took effect in January, Saudi Arabia introduced new transaction taxes, and inflows from the Middle East have weakened because of the conflict, so two major corridors are impaired at once.
  • EBC Financial Group analyst David Precious said weaker transfers from North America over January to August outweighed higher inflows from Europe and the rest of the world.

What Happened?

Central Bank of Kenya Governor Kamau Thugge said there has been some recovery in the past two months and that the bank has been cautious, projecting an increase of 0.7% this year followed by 3% next year. Remittances are Kenya’s largest source of foreign exchange.

Why It Matters?

This is an unusually clean illustration of how an energy shock propagates. Attacks on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz raised global fuel prices, US motor fuel costs rose 35% year over year, American households tightened spending, and the Kenyan workers among them sent less money home, which reduces the foreign exchange reserves of a country eight thousand miles from the disruption. Kenya also imports oil, so the same shock raises its import bill while shrinking the inflows that pay for it. Anyone assessing frontier market external positions should treat US consumer conditions as a direct input rather than a distant variable. The 1% transfer tax deserves a caveat on the data. A one percent levy is not large enough to stop remittances that families depend on, but it is large enough to push flows toward informal channels that official statistics do not capture. A measured decline may therefore overstate the real fall, which matters because central banks and investors use recorded remittance data to assess external balances. Thugge’s cautious projection of 0.7% growth sits oddly against a nine-month decline of 0.2%, so the recovery he describes in recent months is doing a lot of work. For Kenya the practical consequence is pressure on the shilling and on import cover at a moment when oil costs more, which is the same double squeeze facing other African importers. Nigeria has introduced fuel price modulation ahead of elections, South African inflation has risen to 4.4% from 3% before the war, and Angola’s budget windfall from higher oil is partly cancelled by its own subsidy costs. The direction differs for producers and importers, and Kenya is firmly in the second group.

What Next?

Fourth quarter remittance data determines whether 2026 records the first annual decline since 2009, and the monthly series from the Central Bank of Kenya is published regularly. Watch US fuel prices, since they are the binding constraint on the largest corridor, with crude near $96 and the IEA release completing. Any easing of the Middle East conflict would restore Gulf inflows. For Kenya’s external position, the shilling and import cover are the measures that reflect this most directly.
