Bitcoin ETFs Took In $1.08 Billion in Three Days, but Every Steep Rally Since 2024 Needed Over $200 Million a Day

  • US-listed spot bitcoin ETFs have drawn $1.08 billion over three days this week, according to SoSoValue data. Analysts read it as a return of institutional demand, but one that is still tentative and volatile.
  • Bitcoin’s three steep rallies since the funds launched in January 2024 coincided with average daily net inflows of $202 million to $294 million. Across those 199 trading days the funds took in $46.7 billion, or about $235 million a day.
  • Since July 1 the funds have averaged about $86 million a day with no single day above $1 billion, even as bitcoin rose 39% from about $60,000 to $83,500. Days of $500 million or more have come about one in 11 sessions, against about one in five during the earlier rallies.
  • The gap suggests futures traders and direct spot buyers, rather than ETF allocators, have driven much of the recent advance. A steeper, more durable rally would likely need ETF demand to return to a steady $200 million-plus daily pace.

What Happened?

CoinDesk analyzed spot bitcoin ETF flow data after the funds recorded more than $1 billion of net inflows in the first three sessions of the week. It compared the current pace with the three rallies since January 2024 in which bitcoin gained more than 50% without a drawdown of more than 20%. Those rallies saw 39 days of $500 million or more and six days of $1 billion or more. The current advance has been funded at a much slower rate.

Why It Matters?

This week’s $1.08 billion works out to roughly $360 million a day, but three days do not change a run rate that has averaged about $86 million since July. That figure is only about 37% of the $235 million average that accompanied previous steep moves. Bitcoin has gained 39% since July with relatively little help from the ETF channel, so the price is not dependent on allocators, but the most durable source of institutional demand has not yet committed in size. Flow-driven rallies have tended to be steadier because allocators add over weeks rather than hours. Without that base, the market is more exposed to leveraged positioning unwinding, as bitcoin’s failed run at $85,000 overnight showed.

What’s Next?

Watch whether daily inflows can hold above $200 million for a sustained stretch, and whether $1 billion days return. The Fed’s October 27 and 28 meeting is the next macro test, with markets pricing a high chance of a December rate increase. A decisive break above $85,000 backed by steady ETF demand would carry more weight than one driven by short covering.
