Bitcoin Stages a V-Shaped Rebound Toward $78,000 After the Democratic Sweep Knocked It to $75,700, as Options Traders Buy $420 Million of Calls

Bitcoin’s Rare July-September Win Streak (Last Seen 2012) Raises Cycle Questions; Institutional ETF Inflows $5.5B; October ‘Red Month’ Precedent Unclear in Modern Market

  • Bitcoin round-tripped the election in a matter of hours. The largest cryptocurrency climbed close to $78,000 late Tuesday, then dropped more than $2,000 to about $75,700 as early returns pointed to Democrats winning both chambers of Congress. It has since staged a V-shaped recovery to about $78,036, a rebound of roughly 3% from the low by our calculation.
  • Options desks were busy. Paradigm’s Nicolas Quatravaux said the platform printed about $660 million in notional bitcoin options blocks on election day, more than double the day before, with roughly $420 million of calls bought versus about $105 million sold, a 4-to-1 ratio by our calculation. “Overnight was less about the outcome and more about the uncertainty going away,” he said, noting Polymarket had priced a Democratic win above 75% for a while.
  • Risk assets moved together. S&P 500 futures fell as much as 1.3% and Nasdaq 100 futures 2.3% at the low, while the 10-year Treasury yield slid six basis points to 4.90%. Nasdaq futures later pared their decline to just 0.3%, and DWF Labs’ Martin Lee said the same price action was visible in S&P and Nasdaq contracts on Hyperliquid.
  • Demand is still the weak spot. US spot bitcoin ETFs recorded $515 million in outflows in October and have seen an equal amount leave in the first two trading days of November, according to SoSoValue. Bitget Wallet’s Lacie Zhang said the broader trend remains consolidative below resistance at $80,000 to $82,000.

What Happened?

Bitcoin fell just below $76,000 early Wednesday as projections showed Democrats winning control of both chambers of Congress, a setback for pro-crypto President Donald Trump, then recovered to trade about 0.5% higher on the day. Among other majors, ZEC bounced about 5% to roughly $1,200 after Tuesday’s 10% drop, XRP rose 1% to $1.27, ether held near $2,260, SOL slipped about 1% to just under $92 and BNB fell more than 1% to about $689. TDX Strategies founder Dick Lo said bitcoin “dropped initially in response to the Democratic sweep” but recovered “as a clear outcome resolves political uncertainty.”

Why It Matters?

The rebound suggests the market had largely priced the result and mainly feared the uncertainty around it. Lo said a Democratic Congress is generally viewed as less favorable for pro-crypto legislation, but divided government makes major market-unfriendly policy shifts unlikely, and Trump can still govern through executive orders and his veto. The heavy call buying shows traders are betting on further upside rather than hedging more losses, while others sold options near the low to cash in protective bets and profit from elevated volatility.

What’s Next?

Markus Thielen of 10x Research said bitcoin’s daily stochastics show it is oversold and that it “should rally back towards the 82,000 level as its next target.” Giottus CEO Vikram Subburaj said the next few sessions matter more than the bounce: if bitcoin holds above $78,000 while ETF redemptions continue, other buyers are absorbing that supply, and positive ETF flows would add another source of demand. Zhang said a durable recovery requires reclaiming the $80,000 to $82,000 zone with supportive spot and institutional flows.
