Nvidia CEO Reveals Secrets Behind AI Domination Amidst Fierce Competition

  • Blue Owl Capital ($319B AUM) led a $2.4 billion debt package for Iren Ltd. — a Sydney-based Bitcoin miner and AI data center operator — to purchase Nvidia Blackwell Ultra GPUs for its Mackenzie data center campus in British Columbia; the deal consists of a $1.2 billion senior-secured term loan and $1.2 billion in senior secured notes, both priced at 9% interest and maturing 2.5 years after funding, with PIMCO as another key backer.
  • Blue Owl structured the deal as “a combination of equipment financing for GPUs and a direct lending underwrite” — according to senior MD Kurt Tenenbaum, who described it as “unique” and one of the largest of its kind; the structure allows Iren to purchase Nvidia hardware in stages over a defined period, providing operational flexibility while locking in the capital commitment upfront.
  • Iren projected up to $30 billion in capital expenditures for its 2027 fiscal year when it reported earnings Thursday — an extraordinary capex ambition for a company whose shares dropped nearly 13% to $35.40 Friday, suggesting the market is skeptical of whether the company can finance and execute that buildout, even with a landmark debt deal providing a template for GPU-backed borrowing.
  • Blue Owl has emerged as a major financier of AI infrastructure, having backed Meta’s Hyperion data center in Louisiana and a large project in Abilene, Texas being developed with Crusoe and Primary Digital Infrastructure; chip financing is “expected to grow drastically in the coming years,” as new data centers come online and need specialized GPU hardware — making the GPU-as-collateral financing structure potentially one of the defining private credit innovations of the AI buildout cycle.

What Happened?

Blue Owl Capital led a $2.4 billion debt financing for Iren Ltd., split equally between a term loan and senior secured notes, both at 9% with a 2.5-year maturity. PIMCO co-led. The proceeds will fund Iren’s purchase of Nvidia Blackwell Ultra GPUs for its Mackenzie data center campus in British Columbia, Canada. The deal is structured to allow staged equipment purchases. Iren — which also operates Bitcoin mining facilities and has NBA jersey partnership with the Golden State Warriors — reported Thursday that it forecasts up to $30 billion in capex for its 2027 fiscal year. Its stock fell ~13% Friday.

Why It Matters?

The 9% rate and 2.5-year maturity on this deal reveal the current pricing of GPU-backed private credit: expensive but accessible. For context, investment-grade corporate bonds trade well below this; the 9% rate reflects both the asset-specific risk (GPUs depreciate quickly and have a thin secondary market) and the bespoke nature of the financing. But the fact that Blue Owl and PIMCO — sophisticated institutional lenders — structured a $2.4 billion deal around GPU collateral is itself a significant market development: it establishes that GPUs are financeable assets, creating a template for other AI infrastructure operators to access capital without equity dilution. The Iren stock decline of 13% suggests the market is nervous about the $30B capex target’s credibility — but the Blue Owl deal demonstrates that debt capital for GPU procurement is available for operators who can attract lender confidence.

What’s Next?

Watch for Iren’s detailed capex plan to determine how much of the $30B target is backed by committed financing versus aspirational. Also track whether other AI neoclouds replicate the GPU-backed term loan / notes structure — Blue Owl’s template, if successful, could significantly expand the private credit market for AI infrastructure. The Mackenzie campus build-out timeline and first Nvidia hardware delivery dates are the near-term operational milestones. For Blue Owl, watch whether this deal is followed by additional AI infrastructure financings that it brings to its credit funds.
