ByteDance Is Buying Custom Chips From Taiwan Because It Cannot Buy Nvidia’s, Which US Rules Permit
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • ByteDance is in advanced talks to buy custom data centre chips from MediaTek, which would make TikTok’s owner the Taiwanese firm’s second major ASIC customer after Google. ASICs are integrated circuits designed to work with a specific client’s platform.
  • The arrangement is a legal route around export controls. ByteDance, like Alibaba and Tencent, is barred from the most advanced Nvidia chips, and Huawei cannot meet all domestic demand. Commissioning bespoke silicon from chip designers is permitted under current US curbs provided the AI computing power sought stays below a threshold, and ByteDance struck a comparable deal with Qualcomm earlier this year for millions of AI chips.
  • The spending involved is extraordinary. ByteDance is considering capital expenditure of as much as $70 billion this year, more than double last year, potentially rising to $100 billion in 2027 if conditions allow. That exceeds TSMC’s record $64 billion capital budget. It secured a $30 billion loan in September to fund the outlay.
  • MediaTek’s own target is aggressive. It expects AI chip sales of about $2 billion this year and is targeting 15% of an $80 billion market next year, implying roughly $12 billion, a sixfold increase in a segment it is less familiar with. Nvidia announced a $3.5 billion investment in the company in September.

What Happened?

MediaTek has a market value near $210 billion, making it Taiwan’s largest company after TSMC, and is using its mobile processor expertise to enter data centre infrastructure, competing with Qualcomm and Broadcom. ByteDance did not comment and MediaTek declined to. Its AI business centres on flagship models including Seedance, which competes with Alibaba’s Happy Horse, Kuaishou’s Kling AI and Google.

Why It Matters?

Export controls are shaping the architecture of Chinese AI compute rather than limiting its scale, and this deal makes that explicit. Denied general-purpose GPUs at the frontier, Chinese firms are commissioning purpose-built silicon that stays under the permitted threshold, which is legal and is being supplied by American and Taiwanese designers. ByteDance has now done this with Qualcomm and is close to doing it with MediaTek. The policy is achieving a redirection rather than a restriction, and the companies benefiting are the ones the controls were designed to advantage. There is a further wrinkle: Nvidia, barred from selling its best chips into China, has invested $3.5 billion in the firm now supplying custom alternatives to Chinese buyers. The capital expenditure figure is the one to sit with. A single private Chinese company is weighing up to $70 billion of capital spending this year, potentially $100 billion in 2027, against TSMC’s record $64 billion. That is a scale of commitment comparable to the largest American hyperscalers, funded partly by a $30 billion loan taken in September, and it sits within the roughly $578 billion of AI-related debt issued globally this year. Anyone assuming the AI buildout is primarily a US phenomenon with Chinese participants constrained by chip access should revise that view. MediaTek’s target is where the risk concentrates. Growing AI chip revenue from $2 billion to around $12 billion within a year, in data centres where it has limited history, depends on converting exactly these contracts. Winning ByteDance would make the number plausible; failing to would leave a large gap between guidance and reality, and the shares are priced on the ambition. For investors the broader read is that custom silicon is becoming a genuine third path alongside Nvidia’s GPUs and in-house designs, and the designers enabling it are capturing value that would otherwise accrue to the incumbent.

What Next?

Whether the agreement is signed, and the volume committed, determines whether MediaTek’s 15% market share target is credible. Watch for any change in US export rules addressing custom ASIC arrangements, since the current threshold-based approach is what makes these deals possible and the policy intent appears to be broader than the outcome. ByteDance’s final capital spending decision, somewhere up to $70 billion, is the number that moves the whole Asian supply chain. For Nvidia, the question is whether customised alternatives erode demand at the margin or simply serve a market it cannot legally address.
