China’s Financial Overhaul: Xi’s Strategy to Rebalance $9.1 Trillion Debt Crisis

Key takeaways

  • Taiwan detected 26 Chinese aircraft near the island within a 24-hour period.
  • Sixteen planes crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait or entered Taiwan’s air-defense zone.
  • The flights ended a rare 10-day pause in Chinese military activity.
  • Analysts say the operations are part of Beijing’s “gray-zone” pressure strategy against Taiwan.

What Happened?

Taiwan’s defense ministry reported a surge of Chinese military activity near the island after an unexplained 10-day hiatus.

In the past day alone, 26 Chinese military aircraft were detected operating near Taiwan, with 16 crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait or entering Taiwan’s air-defense identification zone. Taiwan also reported seven Chinese naval vessels operating in nearby waters.

The renewed activity marks the return of a pattern that has become increasingly common in recent years, where Chinese aircraft regularly approach Taiwanese airspace.

Why It Matters

China views Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out using force to bring the self-governed island under Beijing’s control.

Military analysts describe these frequent flights as “gray-zone operations.” Rather than triggering open conflict, the flights aim to gradually normalize Chinese military presence around Taiwan and weaken the informal buffer line separating the two sides.

By repeatedly sending aircraft across the strait’s midpoint, Beijing may be attempting to erase the practical significance of that boundary and reshape the security environment around the island.

What’s Next?

The unexplained pause and sudden resumption of flights has fueled speculation among analysts.

Some observers believe the earlier lull may have been linked to diplomatic timing ahead of a potential US-China summit, while others suggest it could have been related to internal military training adjustments.

Regardless of the reason, Taiwan’s military says it remains on high alert and warns that Chinese naval and air activity around the island continues on a daily basis, suggesting the pressure campaign is unlikely to ease soon.
