Coinbase Pushes Beyond Crypto With Prediction Markets and Stocks
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp

Key Takeaways

Powered by lumidawealth.com

  • Coinbase is acquiring The Clearing Company to strengthen its push into prediction markets and expand beyond crypto trading.
  • The deal gives Coinbase potential control over clearing and settlement, a critical layer of market infrastructure.
  • The Clearing Company uses blockchain-based settlement in stablecoins, enabling faster, near-instant trade clearing.
  • The move signals Coinbase’s ambition to become a multi-asset, end-to-end financial exchange.

What Happened?

Coinbase announced it will acquire The Clearing Company, a startup derivatives clearinghouse that has applied for approval from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The acquisition comes shortly after Coinbase began rolling out prediction markets and equities trading, and builds on its existing CFTC-approved derivatives exchange. Although The Clearing Company is not yet operational, it brings experienced leadership from Kalshi and Polymarket, as well as blockchain-based clearing and settlement capabilities using stablecoins.

Why It Matters?

Clearinghouses are core financial infrastructure, managing settlement and risk behind the scenes. By acquiring one, Coinbase moves closer to vertically integrating prediction markets rather than relying on third parties like Kalshi. This could lower costs, improve speed through stablecoin settlement, and give Coinbase greater strategic control as prediction markets gain traction. For investors, the deal underscores Coinbase’s shift from a pure crypto exchange toward a diversified, regulated financial platform with multiple revenue streams.

What’s Next?

The key near-term milestone is regulatory approval from the CFTC for The Clearing Company. Until then, Coinbase will continue routing prediction-market trades through Kalshi. Longer term, investors should watch how quickly Coinbase brings clearing in-house, whether stablecoin settlement gains regulatory acceptance, and how aggressively Coinbase expands prediction markets as part of its broader “Everything Exchange” strategy.
