Eric Trump-Backed Foundation Lands $24 Million Pentagon Contract to Test Combat Humanoid Robots
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • Foundation Future Industries, backed by Eric Trump, has secured a $24 million contract with the Pentagon and is testing a battle robot with US defense forces. Founded in 2024, the San Francisco company has deployed around 10 humanoid robots so far, including with the Air Force and in pilot programs in Ukraine.
  • Its flagship Phantom MK-1 is a man-sized humanoid that can carry 40 kilograms, leased at $100,000 per robot per year. A second-generation model built on AMD chips is in development. The company also runs commercial deployments in auto manufacturing, doing racking and unracking tasks.
  • Foundation’s approach trains robots first on dangerous outdoor industrial jobs — warehouses, shipyards — then adapts that data for warzone use. CEO Sankaet Pathak said defense is “a lynchpin application for heavy industrial work.” The company can currently produce 300 to 500 robots a year in San Francisco and is building a second site to expand capacity.
  • A July US rule now bans most imports of new humanoid robot models and requires domestic components to exceed 65% of a robot’s cost through 2028, rising to 75% in 2029, to avoid a foreign-made label. Foundation sources some parts from China and is adjusting to comply, though Pathak is skeptical the ban achieves its goal.

What Happened?

Foundation is positioning combat-ready humanoid robots as a natural extension of the drones and unmanned vehicles already deployed on modern battlefields. Pathak described the end goal starkly: rather than dropping a bomb on a building, sending a humanoid inside to walk directly to a target. The company acknowledged that its earlier public goal of building 10,000 robots by the end of 2026 was “pretty ambitious” and is not on track, while saying Phantom is close to learning new tasks from just a handful of human demonstrations. A Stanford University report cited in the piece flagged unresolved questions on reliability, accountability, cost and cybersecurity for highly autonomous battlefield systems.

Why It Matters?

The interesting tension here is supply chain, not the robots themselves. Washington’s July import restrictions were designed to force a domestic humanoid robotics base, but Foundation — the company actually building for the Pentagon — sources parts from China and says the ban likely won’t deliver the intended outcome, warning of the same pitfalls the US hit with electric vehicles and drones. That is a company with a defense contract publicly questioning defense policy on supply chain grounds, which is a more credible critique than one from an outside observer. For investors, the leasing model ($100,000 per robot per year) and the gap between the 10,000-unit goal and current 300-500 unit annual capacity show this is still an early-stage production business, not a company anywhere close to battlefield scale. The Stanford report’s reliability and accountability questions are the more binding constraint than manufacturing capacity in the near term.

What’s Next?

Watch how Foundation adjusts sourcing to meet the 65% domestic-content threshold ahead of 2028, since falling short would formally classify its robots as foreign-made under the new rule. The Pentagon testing program is the next real milestone — results there will matter more than production capacity figures for determining whether this moves from pilot to procurement. Longer term, the second-generation AMD-chip robot and progress toward few-shot task learning are the technical markers to track, since true battlefield autonomy still requires the kind of physics and kinematics understanding Pathak says is not yet solved.
