Novo Nordisk Partners With Orbis for Oral Biologic Pills Worth $1.4B; Eli Lilly Also Stakeholder in AI Drug Design Startup

  • Novo Nordisk agreed to partner with privately-held Danish startup Orbis Medicines on next-generation oral pills for heart and metabolic diseases in a deal worth up to $1.4 billion. Novo is also making an undisclosed strategic investment in Orbis. The partnership addresses Novo’s critical need to refill its drug pipeline ahead of generic competition for blockbuster injectable medications Ozempic and Wegovy.
  • Orbis’s technology uses artificial intelligence to design synthetic compounds that enable more efficient delivery of biologic medicines through oral pills. Current oral Wegovy requires far more drug ingredient than the injectable version because the stomach digests the pill as if it were food. Orbis technology aims to ensure more of the medicine enters the bloodstream, making oral versions more effective at lower doses.
  • Orbis is backed by top-tier venture investors and Eli Lilly & Co., Novo’s archrival in the weight-loss and metabolic disease market. Orbis previously raised €116 million ($133 million) in VC funding from Forbion and Novo Holdings (Novo’s biggest shareholder). Orbis stock surged 8.73% on announcement of Novo partnership, validating the startup’s AI-driven oral biologic platform as strategically valuable IP.
  • The partnership reflects broader competitive dynamics: both Novo and Lilly are racing to develop oral versions of injectable GLP-1 medicines (weight-loss, metabolic disease) as the market shifts toward oral administration. Novo’s investment in Orbis signals confidence that oral biologic technology is critical differentiator in next-generation drug competition against Lilly and others.

What Happened?

Novo Nordisk agreed to partner with Danish biotech startup Orbis Medicines on next-generation oral biologic pills worth up to $1.4 billion, with Novo making an undisclosed strategic investment. Orbis uses artificial intelligence to design compounds that enable more efficient oral delivery of biologic medicines, particularly Novo’s Ozempic and Wegovy analogs. Current oral Wegovy requires higher drug doses than injections because stomach digestion reduces bioavailability; Orbis technology improves oral absorption efficiency. Orbis is also backed by rival Eli Lilly & Co. as a stakeholder. Orbis stock surged 8.73% on announcement. Novo is refilling its drug pipeline ahead of generic competition for Ozempic and Wegovy blockbusters.

Why It Matters?

For Novo Nordisk shareholders, the partnership validates the company’s strategy to move from injectables to orals—a shift that could unlock massive additional patient populations (patients avoiding needles). For Orbis stakeholders and employees, the Novo partnership validates their AI drug-design platform at scale and de-risks the company’s path to market. For Eli Lilly shareholders, Lilly’s existing stake in Orbis positions the company to benefit from the oral biologic technology while competing with Novo. For the broader pharma market, the partnership signals that oral biologic delivery is the next competitive frontier—companies investing now in this technology will win market share in obesity and metabolic disease treatment.

What’s Next?

Monitor Novo’s pipeline announcements for additional Orbis compounds; if the company advances multiple oral biologic candidates, it would validate the partnership’s potential. Track Eli Lilly’s own oral biologic development; if Lilly accelerates programs using Orbis technology, it would signal dual competitive strategy. Watch for regulatory approvals of oral versions of Ozempic/Wegovy competitors; if oral formulations reach market before injectables decline, it could accelerate patient migration. Monitor Orbis valuation trajectory; if the startup fundraises again at higher valuation post-Novo partnership, it would validate the deal’s impact. Also track competitive responses from other pharma companies; if others invest in alternative oral biologic platforms (Amgen, Pfizer), it would signal sector-wide pivot to oral delivery.
