Sprouts Plunges as Much as 23% After Cutting Its Outlook to a 1.7% Comparable Sales Decline, Blaming a Lettuce Outbreak and Squeezed Shoppers

  • Sprouts Farmers Market shares fell as much as 23% in postmarket trading Wednesday after the grocer missed third-quarter expectations and cut its full-year outlook. The stock was already down 22% this year.
  • Sprouts now expects 2026 comparable sales to fall 1.7%, versus an earlier forecast of as much as 0.5% growth, a swing of up to 2.2 percentage points (Lumida calculation), and it also lowered adjusted EPS guidance.
  • A food-safety outbreak hit demand. The cyclospora outbreak linked to shredded iceberg lettuce infected almost 13,000 people and cut comparable sales by 0.6% in the quarter, CFO Curtis Valentine said, and it remains a slight headwind in the fourth quarter.
  • Shoppers are trading down. COO Nick Konat said core customers are visiting less often, buying less per trip and shifting to cheaper products, adding that “affordability is the key, current issue we need to address and solve.”

What Happened?

Sprouts plans to win shoppers back with lower prices, including cuts on items like cage-free eggs and raw almonds. Valentine said high fuel costs and shrink, the industry’s term for theft, are also eating into margins. The outbreak has hurt lettuce demand across the country: Albertsons noted the sales impact earlier this month, and restaurant chain Salad and Go filed for bankruptcy in August, blaming the outbreak.

Why It Matters?

Sprouts had been a premium-grocery growth story, so a guidance cut tied to affordability is a warning about the health of middle- and upper-income spending on discretionary food. Price cuts can revive traffic but usually come at the expense of margins, which are already being squeezed by fuel and theft.

What’s Next?

Watch whether price investments stabilize traffic in the fourth quarter and how much they cost in margin, and whether other grocers report similar trading down. Thursday’s September consumer spending data will offer a broader read on household demand.
