- Tesla unveiled its next-generation Roadster at a SpaceX test site in McGregor, Texas, nearly a decade after taking the first $50,000 deposits in 2017. Production is slated for 2028, no price was announced, Musk said it is not necessarily a safety-optimised car and it was unclear whether it will be street legal.
- The strategically significant statement was almost an aside. Musk said the new Roadster will be the last vehicle Tesla produces that is intended to be controlled by a human driver, and it will not include the company’s automated driving system.
- CNBC is direct that the car itself is immaterial financially, describing it as a high-end, low-volume model unlikely to affect results. What it has done is intensify merger speculation, with Barclays analyst Dan Levy predicting a transaction could happen before the end of 2026 and SpaceX chief operating officer Gwynne Shotwell having said before the June listing that a merger might make Musk’s life a little easier.
- The combination would be enormous. SpaceX is valued at about $2 trillion and Tesla at $1.4 trillion, two of only twelve US companies worth at least $1 trillion.
What Happened?
The prototype accelerated from zero to 60 miles per hour in under a second on Tesla’s timer, climbed a curved ramp, clung to it upside down, flipped in mid-air and hovered before landing, using SpaceX thrusters, carbon overlay pressure vessels, diffusers and fans. Musk first promoted the concept in November 2017 and the company has missed every targeted delivery date since. Reservations have reopened at $50,000 in the US, Canada and China. One holder, Lawrence O’Connor of Other World Computing, described his $250,000 Founder’s Edition reservation from November 2017 as an interest-free loan to the company. Tesla reports third quarter results after the bell on Wednesday.
Why It Matters?
The merger question is the only part of this with financial consequence and the evidence for it is accumulating. The two companies already work together, pay each other and share personnel, and that entanglement has deepened through 2026. A combination would create a roughly $3.4 trillion entity and resolve related-party complexity that is awkward for both sets of shareholders. The questions differ on each side: Tesla holders care about the exchange ratio, while SpaceX holders would be acquiring automotive exposure at a moment when their own company is reportedly borrowing $40 billion for chips, building a satellite mobile network against three entrenched carriers and buying $17 billion of spectrum from a company whose own unit went bankrupt attempting that strategy. The autonomy commitment deserves more attention than the hovering. Saying this is the last vehicle built for a human driver means Tesla’s future production is autonomous only, which is a firmer statement of the robotaxi thesis than anything in the analyst commentary that treats the stock as range bound. It also arrives while the company faces a federal investigation over claims that robotaxis speed in school zones. The valuation rests on that transition, and management has now foreclosed the alternative. On the deposits, $50,000 collected since 2017 for a car reaching production in 2028 is eleven years of customer capital held without interest, through a period when rates moved from near zero to above 5%. That is a factual description of the arrangement rather than a criticism, and reservation holders entered it voluntarily, but it is worth stating given the product still has no price and uncertain street legality.
What Next?
Third quarter results land Wednesday and margins matter more than deliveries, given the discounting that supported volumes in Canada and China. Any concrete development on a Tesla and SpaceX combination would override everything else, and Barclays has put a year-end timeframe on it. The robotaxi investigation is the unscheduled risk to the thesis management has now committed to entirely. For the Roadster specifically, 2028 production and an unannounced price mean there is little to assess until specifications and homologation are disclosed.
