The UAE Pumped a Record 5.3 Million Barrels a Day and Still Drained Its Inventories to an All-Time Low
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • UAE total oil production including condensates rose 400,000 barrels a day to a record 5.3 million in September, according to the International Energy Agency, with crude output above 4.4 million barrels a day and nearing maximum capacity. That exceeds the previous highs set for total oil in August and crude in June.
  • The country simultaneously depleted its observable above-ground inventories at a record pace of more than 270,000 barrels a day, drawing them to an all-time low. Record production was therefore not sufficient to meet export commitments without drawing down stocks.
  • Gulf producer flows reached more than 75% of pre-war levels in September, led by Saudi Arabia, so the region remains roughly a quarter below normal more than seven months into the disruption.
  • The UAE left OPEC as of May, freeing it from output caps that had been a source of frustration for years, and has been among the most successful regional producers at restoring flows through the Strait of Hormuz using a fleet of tankers to shuttle cargoes through the chokepoint before transferring them to other vessels.

What Happened?

The IEA noted it is unclear how far the regional rebound has withstood a new wave of Iranian attacks on tankers transiting Hormuz and escalating Houthi hostilities. Crude traded at 95.38, above the 91.59 seen five days earlier.

Why It Matters?

The inventory draw contradicts the headline and is the more important number. A producer running at near-maximum capacity while simultaneously emptying its storage at a record rate, to an all-time low, has exhausted its buffer. Record output was not enough to cover what it shipped, which means the exported volumes depended on stocks that no longer exist. From here the UAE has no remaining flexibility: it cannot raise production meaningfully and cannot draw further on inventories. That is a fragile position for the producer that has been the region’s most effective at keeping oil moving, and it is the opposite of the resilience the production record appears to show. The market is reading the situation correctly. September data shows record supply, and October prices are rising, with crude at 95.38 and Brent having passed $105 last week on renewed tanker attacks. Investors are pricing the escalation rather than the output, which is rational given the IEA’s own caveat that this data predates the latest attacks. The mechanism sustaining Gulf exports, discreet tanker shuttles through Hormuz with ship-to-ship transfers, is precisely what the intensifying attacks target. The OPEC dimension deserves noting for anyone modelling supply discipline. The UAE left the organisation in May and immediately produced at record levels near capacity. A member departing and maximising output is the clearest demonstration available that the restraint mechanism binds only those who remain, and it is a precedent other frustrated members will have observed. For the wider supply picture, this sits alongside the G7 releasing up to 100 million barrels, a US arrangement for Russian diesel exports that six Republican senators oppose, and federal support for refinery expansion. Policy is adding supply from several directions while the physical situation in the Gulf tightens.

What Next?

October data will show whether the Gulf recovery survived the latest attacks, and the IEA has flagged that question directly. Watch whether UAE production can be sustained now that inventories are exhausted, since the two were working together in September and only one remains. Saudi Arabia leads the regional rebound and its output is the larger variable. For prices, the balance between policy-driven supply additions and security-driven disruption is what determines the path, and the market is currently weighting the latter. US consumer price data and the Federal Reserve meeting later this month sit downstream of all of it.
