Three Independents Running in Republican Strongholds Say They Won’t Caucus With Either Party
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • The Senate Leadership Fund plans to spend an additional $8 million supporting Nebraska Senator Pete Ricketts against independent challenger Dan Osborn, on top of $7 million already deployed through the Cornhusker Majority PAC. More than $55 million has been spent or scheduled in a state of roughly 2 million people, about $27 per resident, with Republican-aligned groups outspending Osborn-aligned ones by more than two to one.
  • The competitive dynamic extends across farm states. Senate races in Iowa and Kansas have also become closer, which Bloomberg attributes to the Iran war spiking fuel and fertilizer prices alongside the market effects of trade policy.
  • Osborn is one of three independents challenging Republican incumbents, with Seth Bodnar in Montana and Brian Bengs in South Dakota. All three said Monday they would not caucus with either party. Osborn said he does not take corporate money because he will not do their bidding, and will not caucus with a party for the same reason.
  • Polls show a close race in Nebraska, though the nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the seat as likely to stay Republican. Osborn lost to Deb Fischer by 7 points two years ago in a state Trump carried by 20, outrunning the party baseline by 13 points.

What Happened?

Trump held a rally with Ricketts in Nebraska last week and travels to Montana on Wednesday. Ricketts has spent heavily to characterise Osborn as a false independent who would hand Senate control to Democrats. Osborn, a machinist who led a strike at a local factory in 2021, is touring the state’s counties holding four or five town halls a day on a populist platform criticising both parties as beholden to corporate interests. His proposals include middle-class tax cuts, antitrust enforcement, lower prescription drug prices, and requiring credit card competition to reduce swipe fees, a measure he has praised Trump for proposing.

Why It Matters?

Three independents committing publicly not to caucus with either party creates an outcome prediction markets are not pricing. Betting markets quote Senate control as a binary party probability, most recently around 65% for Democrats, but if any of these candidates wins, the chamber contains members whose votes must be negotiated individually rather than delivered by a leadership structure. For anyone modelling policy outcomes on tax, energy, financial regulation or AI, that is materially different from a party flip, because a narrow majority with unaligned members produces legislative uncertainty rather than a predictable programme. The probability is low and the consequence is distinct enough to be worth holding separately. The farm state dynamic connects the energy shock to the electoral map. Fertilizer production is natural gas intensive, so the same supply disruption pushing Brent above $105 and diesel above $6 a gallon is raising agricultural input costs directly, while trade policy has affected commodity markets. Those are the mechanisms turning races in Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas competitive, which is the clearest evidence yet that the energy shock is reaching politics in places where the economic pain is concentrated rather than diffuse. Osborn’s specific proposals matter more than the horse race for investors. Credit card swipe fee competition is a live policy with identifiable effects on the card networks, and it has support from both an independent challenger and the president, which is the configuration under which such measures actually advance. Antitrust enforcement and prescription drug pricing are the other two, each with sectors attached.

What Next?

The November 3 midterms resolve all of it, and the Cook rating suggests Nebraska stays Republican despite close polling. Watch the Montana and South Dakota races alongside it, since the three independents represent a correlated scenario rather than three separate long shots. Farm state polling through October is the best available read on whether input costs are genuinely moving votes. For policy exposure, swipe fee legislation is the item with the clearest corporate consequence and it has bipartisan support in principle. Energy prices between now and the vote remain the variable most likely to shift these races further.
