US Bombs Iran for Ninth Straight Day as Hormuz Standoff Deepens, Brent Crude Tops $90

The Iran War’s Invisible Casualty: A Helium Crisis That Could Cripple AI Chips and MRI Scanners

  • The US military conducted a ninth straight day of airstrikes on Iran on Monday, targeting military infrastructure and communications networks in a three-hour operation ending around 5:30 a.m. Iranian time; Iran responded by continuing attacks on US military bases across Kuwait, Jordan, Bahrain, and Iraq, with Kuwait’s main state energy company reporting “significant material losses” at an unspecified site and two power and desalination plants hit in recent days; the tit-for-tat exchanges are escalating in lethality — a US service member was killed in northern Iraq Saturday during disposal of a downed Iranian drone, following two others killed in an Iranian attack on Jordan the day before, with a fourth service member still missing; President Trump said the latest US strikes were conducted “in honor” of the fallen personnel and warned last week he would widen the scope of targets until Iran backs down.
  • The Strait of Hormuz standoff has shattered energy markets: Brent crude rose above $90 a barrel for the first time in more than five weeks in early Monday trading, and US gasoline prices climbed back over the $4-a-gallon mark for the first time in a month, a threshold with significant political consequences for Trump and Republicans ahead of November’s midterm elections; before the conflict began, the Strait of Hormuz carried approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies, and shipping volumes through the strait have fallen to levels last seen at the height of the initial conflict flare-up in March and early April; the prolonged closure is now creating real supply disruption rather than just price volatility, as tankers and other vessels reroute around the strait at significant cost and delay.
  • Diplomatic signals are mixed and fragile: Iran’s foreign ministry said mediators Qatar and Pakistan “have been active in recent days” and that ideas from mediators have been conveyed to Tehran; Iran’s interior minister is traveling to Pakistan on Monday; US Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged Iran continues to signal interest in negotiations and said the US sees signs of internal splits between Iranian factions that want a deal and hardliners who want to fight; but Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran will not return to the negotiating table while under active US military attack, framing control of the strait as a matter of Iranian sovereignty and strategic leverage — “without Iranian security the region cannot have complete security,” he said; a US-Iran interim peace deal signed a month ago has all but collapsed and nuclear talks remain stalled until the Hormuz question is resolved.
  • The military buildup is intensifying: the US is sending additional F-35 and F-16 fighter jets along with aerial-refueling aircraft to the Middle East, according to the New York Times; Israel has also entered the picture, intercepting an Iranian drone near the Israel-Syria border on Sunday and warning Tehran through Defense Minister Israel Katz that Israel would resume its own strikes if targeted; Iran fired upon Aqaba in Jordan — which sits adjacent to Israel’s border — in recent days; the widening geographic footprint of exchanges raises the risk of miscalculation and of the conflict drawing in additional regional actors, while the economic cost in energy prices is already feeding through to global inflation at a moment when major central banks are navigating the final stages of tightening cycles.

What Happened?

The US carried out its ninth consecutive day of airstrikes on Iran on Monday, targeting military and communications infrastructure in a three-hour overnight operation. Iran continued striking US military installations across the region — Kuwait, Jordan, Bahrain, and Iraq — and the standoff over the Strait of Hormuz showed no sign of easing. Brent crude rose above $90 a barrel and US gasoline prices crossed $4 a gallon again. Qatar and Pakistan are active as mediators, and Iran’s interior minister is traveling to Islamabad, but Iran says it will not negotiate under active military attack.

Why It Matters?

Nine consecutive days of US-Iran military exchange is no longer a skirmish — it is a sustained conflict with compounding consequences. The Hormuz closure is removing approximately one-fifth of global oil and LNG supply from normal transit routes, and the market impact is now feeding through to consumer prices in the US at a politically sensitive moment. Each additional US casualty raises domestic pressure on the Trump administration to either escalate decisively or accept a negotiated outcome, while Iran’s refusal to negotiate under fire means a diplomatic off-ramp requires a pause in military operations that neither side has yet been willing to offer. The risk of the conflict expanding to involve Israel — which has now intercepted an Iranian drone — adds a further escalation dimension that markets are only beginning to price.

What’s Next?

The next 48-72 hours are critical: watch whether Pakistan’s mediation produces any concrete proposals and whether Iran’s interior minister’s Islamabad visit yields a framework for talks; watch whether the US expands its target set as Trump threatened, which would likely trigger a proportionally larger Iranian response; watch Brent crude as a real-time signal of how markets are assessing conflict resolution probability — a move toward $95-100 would indicate markets pricing in extended closure; and watch Israel’s posture, as any Iranian strike on Israeli territory or adjacent areas would almost certainly draw a direct Israeli military response, dramatically widening the conflict’s scope and participants.
