US, Singapore and Taiwan Officials Suspect an Executive Close to Nvidia’s Jensen Huang Was Feeding Information to China, as the Justice Department Probes Her Former Firm Megaspeed

How Nvidia’s AI Chips are Secretly Making Their Way to China

  • Officials suspect a Chinese intelligence link. U.S. officials last year concluded that Chinese citizen Alice Huang, then a top executive at Singapore-based Megaspeed International, was sharing information with the Chinese government while working with Nvidia to build data centers in Asia, people familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal. She is not related to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
  • Surveillance and a disappearance. Authorities in Singapore and Taiwan separately investigated her ties to China, at one point putting physical surveillance teams on her, and suspected she was recruited by Chinese intelligence after learning of what they saw as a close relationship with the Nvidia chief. In late 2024, as authorities began surveilling her, she disappeared into China for a period, and her whereabouts and current role are unknown.
  • Megaspeed is under federal investigation. Commerce Department officials began investigating in late 2024 whether Megaspeed was diverting Nvidia chips to China in violation of export controls, a probe that largely stalled, and the Justice Department now leads the inquiry. Singapore police said their investigation into Megaspeed is ongoing.
  • Nvidia and China push back. An Nvidia spokesman said Jensen Huang’s interactions with Alice Huang “are not unusual or unexpected” given their business ties, while the Chinese Embassy rejected what it called a “Chinese spy narrative.” Megaspeed did not respond to requests for comment.

What Happened?

The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that officials in the U.S., Singapore and Taiwan are concerned that Alice Huang, a data-center executive with close ties to Jensen Huang, is a Chinese intelligence source, potentially giving Beijing access to information about the world’s most valuable AI chips. Megaspeed buys Nvidia chips to install in data centers in countries such as Malaysia and sells that computing capacity to customers; it was set up in 2023 after a Chinese firm split off its overseas operation. Alice Huang was photographed with Jensen Huang in Taipei in 2024 and 2025 at meetings that included other Nvidia cloud partners in Asia. “We’re confident that if the U.S. government believes that any person is a threat to American industry, it would let us know,” the Nvidia spokesman said.

Why It Matters?

The report adds to scrutiny of how advanced U.S. chips reach China despite export controls, often through data centers in nearby countries that Chinese companies access remotely. That matters for Nvidia, which has been largely locked out of China since last April, when the Commerce Department banned sales of its Hopper chips; China accounted for about one-fifth of its revenue in 2023, and Jensen Huang has said the company went “from 95% market share to 0%” there. Jensen Huang has built a close relationship with President Trump and pushed for wider China access, and the administration rolled back many Biden-era export rules, an approach some in the administration see as too deferential to China. In March, Super Micro co-founder Wally Liaw was arrested on charges of helping smuggle $2.5 billion of servers with advanced Nvidia chips into China; he pleaded not guilty.

What’s Next?

The Justice Department’s Megaspeed probe and Singapore’s investigation are the main items to watch, along with any pressure in Washington to tighten rules on overseas data centers serving Chinese customers. Security experts argue federal agencies have shown little willingness to catch smugglers, and new findings could revive calls for stricter controls. For Nvidia investors, the risk is that tighter rules or reputational fallout further limit sales in Asia at a time when the company is lobbying to regain access to China.
