US Stock Futures Little Changed Friday After Thursday’s Post-Fed Rally; Asian Markets Gain on Rate Clarity, AI Narrative Intact

  • US stock futures were little changed Friday morning following Thursday’s post-Federal Reserve bounce as investors assess whether higher-for-longer rates derail artificial intelligence capex thesis. Dow Jones futures rose 41 points (0.08%); S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq-100 futures flat. Thursday’s closing rallies: Dow up 0.6% (316 points), S&P 500 up 1.1%, Nasdaq Composite up 1.7%. Rally followed Fed’s unanimous vote to raise rates 25bps and signal at least one more hike this year.
  • Asian markets rallied Friday validating global rate normalization: Japan’s Nikkei 225 up 1.90%, Topix up 0.17%, signaling BOJ rate hike (1.25%) confidence; South Korea’s Kospi up 2.67%, Kosdaq up 0.45%; Hong Kong Hang Seng up 0.67%; mainland China CSI 300 up 1.05%. Australia’s ASX 200 flat. Regional strength suggests investors view Fed clarity as positive for Asia growth narratives despite higher global rates.
  • Thursday’s technology rally—Nasdaq up 1.7% post-Fed—implies investors see AI capex thesis surviving higher-for-longer rate environment. Invesco’s Brian Levitt told CNBC: “This [cycle is] not going to end with higher Fed funds rate necessarily anytime soon…It’s going to end when something breaks in the AI trade, when a hyperscaler pulls back on investment…But that’s not the current environment.” Market is betting AI ROI justifies continued capex deployment at 3.75%-4.00% Fed funds rate.
  • Week concluding with Fed commentary from Governor Michelle Bowman and Kansas City Fed President Jeffrey Schmid. Dow down 1.5% week-to-date (third straight losing week); S&P 500 down 0.3% week-to-date; only Nasdaq Composite up 0.3% on tech strength. Market bifurcation: rate-sensitive sectors struggling; AI/tech outperforming on earnings narrative resilience.

What Happened?

US stock futures were little changed Friday morning after Thursday’s post-Fed bounce. Dow Jones futures rose 41 points (0.08%); S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq-100 futures flat. Thursday’s closes: Dow up 0.6% (316 points), S&P 500 up 1.1%, Nasdaq Composite up 1.7%. Asian markets rallied: Nikkei 225 up 1.90%, Topix up 0.17%, Kospi up 2.67%, Kosdaq up 0.45%, Hang Seng up 0.67%, CSI 300 up 1.05%, ASX 200 flat. Friday’s Fed speakers: Governor Michelle Bowman and Kansas City Fed President Jeffrey Schmid. Week-to-date: Dow down 1.5% (third straight losing week), S&P 500 down 0.3%, Nasdaq Composite up 0.3%.

Why It Matters?

For equity investors, Thursday’s rally despite hawkish Fed signals validates thesis that AI capex ROI justifies continued investment despite 3.75%-4.00% Fed funds rates. For tech/AI hyperscaler shareholders (Nvidia, Microsoft, Google, Amazon), the continued market strength suggests enterprise spending on AI infrastructure is rate-resilient. For Asian equity investors, the Nikkei and Kospi rallies validate that global rate normalization is positive for regional growth rather than deflationary shock. For Fed policymakers, the market’s response—rally on rate hike clarity—suggests investors prefer predictability over surprise holds. For bond investors, the consolidation in futures (flat after Thursday rally) suggests market is digesting new rate regime before next catalyst.

What’s Next?

Monitor Friday’s Fed speakers (Bowman, Schmid) for additional inflation/rate guidance; if dovish commentary emerges, it could reignite equity rally. Watch US market open; if Thursday’s gains hold into cash market, it would validate AI narrative over rate concerns. Track earnings season; if tech companies guide higher despite higher-for-longer rates, it supports the AI ROI thesis. Monitor Asian market momentum; if Nikkei and Kospi sustain gains into close, it signals confidence in global growth outlook. Also watch for BOJ policy signals; if BOJ’s recent hike (1.25%) triggers yen strength, it could pressure Japanese exporters and offset rally. Finally, track 10-year Treasury yields; if they break back above 5%, it could derail the consolidation and challenge AI valuations.
