  • Meta is launching a free five-week “workforce academy” in partnership with CBRE and the Associated Builders and Contractors, guaranteeing program graduates a job at a Meta data-center construction site in Louisiana, Ohio, Indiana, or Texas.
  • The company is committing $115 million to the program this year, targeting electricians and HVAC technicians amid an industry-wide shortage — the construction sector needs an estimated 349,000 net new workers this year alone, per the Associated Builders and Contractors.
  • The academy follows Meta’s fiber-installation training program launched in April, which drew 35,000 applications in its first seven days, signaling strong demand from workers seeking entry into the data-center construction boom.
  • Meta recently laid off 8,000 white-collar employees to fund its AI infrastructure push, which includes the Hyperion data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana — described by the company as so large “it would cover a significant part of Manhattan.”

What Happened?

Meta Platforms announced a free five-week “workforce academy” designed to train Americans in skilled trades needed to build its data centers. The program, run in partnership with CBRE and the Associated Builders and Contractors, covers training costs and guarantees graduates a construction job at one of Meta’s data-center sites. The $115 million commitment this year covers pilot programs in Louisiana, Ohio, Indiana, and Texas — states where Meta has major construction projects underway, including its sprawling Hyperion facility. The move comes as the entire data-center industry faces a severe workforce shortage: the construction sector needs to hire roughly 349,000 net new workers this year to keep up with demand for electricians, HVAC technicians, and other tradespeople.

Why It Matters?

The AI infrastructure race is creating a two-tier labor market: surging demand for skilled trades workers to build the physical infrastructure, and displacement pressure on white-collar workers from the AI models running inside it. Meta embodies this tension directly — the company laid off 8,000 office employees to fund data-center construction, while now spending $115 million to hire the tradespeople those data centers require. The hiring boom is a genuine economic boon for rural and working-class communities near construction sites, but those jobs are temporary; once a data center is operational, it employs far fewer workers than it took to build. Data-center construction job postings have roughly doubled in the last two years.

What’s Next?

The program will pilot this year before scaling. Meta is already tracking strong early interest — its prior fiber-installation program drew 35,000 applicants in its first week. The BlackRock Foundation announced a parallel $100 million initiative to train electricians in Texas. The broader trend is clear: as hyperscalers race to build AI infrastructure, investment in trades training is becoming a strategic priority, with major tech companies effectively building their own blue-collar workforce pipelines rather than relying on traditional labor markets that cannot keep pace with demand.
