Zcash Holders Vote 99.9% for Faster Transactions and Preserve Bitcoin-Style Halvings in NU7 Governance Landslide
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • Zcash holders overwhelmingly voted in favor of network upgrades in the NU7 governance vote, with nearly 2.4 million ZEC (about 67% of eligible tokens) participating. Some 99.9% of voters backed reducing block time to 25 seconds from 75 seconds to speed transaction confirmation, while 98.9% voted to preserve Zcash’s bitcoin-style halving schedule rather than adopt a smoother emission curve.
  • The voting mechanism itself was privacy-preserving: only ZEC held in Ironwood (Zcash’s private transaction pool) could vote, with ballots encrypted and split into 16 pieces before counting. Validators could tabulate results without revealing individual voter identities or balances, allowing holders to exercise economic weight while maintaining privacy—a stark contrast to traditional token voting that exposes wallet sizes and voting positions.
  • The NU7 vote also approved 96.6% support for delaying the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM) fund reissuance until February 2031, allowing fees collected through the mechanism to accumulate for several years before recycling back to miners. Additionally, 99.3% of voters backed shipping NU7 as soon as possible with a September 30 readiness deadline, dropping unfinished features rather than delaying the entire upgrade.
  • The governance outcome provides developers with a clearer roadmap after months of disagreement over NU7 scope. Zcash is simultaneously working on faster private-transaction proofs (reduced from 3+ seconds to under 200 milliseconds on mobile) and Project Tachyon to increase private-transaction throughput. The vote legitimizes these efforts as core network priorities backed by overwhelming ZEC holder consensus.

What Happened?

Zcash (ZEC) holders voted overwhelmingly in the NU7 governance referendum with 99.9% backing faster 25-second block times (down from 75 seconds) and 98.9% supporting preservation of Zcash’s bitcoin-style halving schedule. Nearly 2.4 million ZEC participated out of 3.6 million eligible at the snapshot, exceeding the 1 million ZEC minimum turnout threshold. The voting system employed privacy-preserving mechanisms, with encrypted ballots split into pieces before counting to prevent linking voter identities or balances to their votes. Additionally, 96.6% voted to delay NSM fund reissuance until February 2031, and 99.3% backed shipping NU7 by September 30 readiness deadline, dropping incomplete features to avoid further delays.

Why It Matters?

For ZEC holders and Zcash ecosystem participants, the governance vote delivers a decisive mandate for faster private transactions and preservation of the halving schedule, removing months of uncertainty about the network’s technical and monetary direction. The privacy-preserving voting mechanism itself is significant: it demonstrates that a major cryptocurrency can conduct legitimate governance while protecting voter anonymity and balance confidentiality—a capability that addresses institutional concerns about blockchain governance compromising privacy. For development teams building on Zcash, the vote clarifies that performance improvements (25-second blocks, faster proof generation, Project Tachyon) are core community priorities. For the broader crypto ecosystem, the 67% turnout and overwhelming consensus margins suggest that privacy-focused protocols can achieve strong governance participation when voting mechanisms respect user privacy—contrasting sharply with non-private token voting systems that often see single-digit participation rates.

What’s Next?

Watch for NU7 feature implementation progress toward the September 30 readiness deadline—if developers hit the target, the upgrade activates soon after testnet completion. Monitor adoption of the 25-second block time and its impact on private-transaction confirmation speeds; if the improvement is meaningful, it could drive increased Zcash usage for time-sensitive payments. Track Project Tachyon and Zakura development efforts; breakthroughs in private-transaction throughput could significantly improve Zcash’s competitive positioning versus Monero and other privacy coins. Also watch Zcash’s community sentiment if fees begin accumulating in the NSM without reissuance until 2031; if deflation concerns emerge, expect future governance votes revisiting the reissuance timeline. Finally, monitor whether other privacy-focused or privacy-concerned protocols adopt Zcash’s encrypted-ballot governance model as a standard for high-stakes voting while maintaining anonymity.
