An Ex-Citadel Quant’s Hyperbolic Is Building Toward Physically Settled GPU Futures as CoreWeave’s Slide Sends Wall Street Looking for an AI Hedge

  • Hyperbolic, a 50-person fintech led by former Citadel Securities quant Jasper Zhang, is building a spot marketplace for tradable GPU computing power that lets investors buy and sell GPU clusters. Zhang sees it as the first building block of physically settled GPU futures, which would give contract owners control of a cluster with known characteristics and a way to hedge against a decline in AI demand.
  • The startup has raised $20 million since its 2022 launch, is in the middle of another funding round and expects a $150 million annualized run rate by year-end. It says it has about 250,000 users and an estimated $200 million of annual GPU compute connected to its platform.
  • Cash-settled products are moving ahead first. CME Group plans a futures contract tied to GPU pricing from Silicon Data, an index provider backed by DRW, and the CFTC recently extended its review to Nov. 9, likely also tying up a proposed contract from Intercontinental Exchange and data provider Ornn.
  • The push comes as CoreWeave shares slide and drag much of the AI complex with them. Zhang argues CoreWeave’s debt situation would be less concerning if providers had more ways to monetize spare GPU capacity in a slowdown, because cash-settled futures “do not by themselves put idle GPUs to work.”

What Happened?

CNBC profiled Hyperbolic on Monday as investors look for ways to hedge AI risk. The company’s Forge software logs into clusters worldwide and makes technical tweaks so mismatched clusters work better together, allowing traders to buy and sell a standardized unit of compute and also control the underlying GPUs. GPU performance varies with networking, memory and security, and financing agreements often prevent builders from sharing prices, so a survey-based index can miss outlier costs, a gap known in futures markets as basis risk. Zhang, 31, finished a math doctorate at U.C. Berkeley in two years before building trading models at Citadel Securities, and head of finance Hong Chan Kim previously worked at Point72, Balyasny and Citadel.

Why It Matters?

A working hedge for compute would address the core risk now hitting AI infrastructure stocks and credit: operators like CoreWeave could end up holding billions of dollars of hardware with little way to cash out if demand stalls. Cash-settled contracts would let investors hedge price exposure, but Silicon Data CEO Carmen Li noted that index products leave buyers financially hedged without solving procurement. DRW’s Don Wilson said cash futures are “a great first building block,” comparing them with cash-settled electricity and oil contracts. For exchanges such as CME and ICE, a liquid GPU contract could become a new commodity franchise if regulators approve it.

What’s Next?

The next milestone is the CFTC’s Nov. 9 deadline on CME’s cash-settled GPU futures, which also affects the ICE and Ornn proposal. Watch whether Hyperbolic closes its funding round and hits its targeted $150 million run rate by year-end. Kim expects cash-settled futures may not reflect real conditions, so the spread between index prices and physical GPU rental rates will be an early test. Further weakness in CoreWeave and other neoclouds would likely increase demand for these hedging tools.

Affected Tickers and Coins: CRWV, CME, ICE
