Key Takeaways:
1. Apple to unveil new AI features at WWDC, including message-writing and photo editing.
2. Investors anticipate AI announcements to boost Apple’s stagnating stock and iPhone sales.
3. Potential partnerships with OpenAI could enhance Apple’s AI capabilities and mitigate risks.

What Happened?

Apple, lagging behind rivals in integrating generative AI into core products, is poised for a crucial reveal at Monday’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The event, starting at 1 p.m. ET, will showcase new AI features like message-writing assistance, photo editing, and text summarization, along with enhancements to Siri.

Apple may also announce partnerships with advanced AI providers such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, insiders suggest. Despite an 8% rise in Apple shares over the past year, competitors like Microsoft and Google have surged 26% and 41%, respectively, by rapidly incorporating AI technologies.

Why It Matters?

Apple’s AI advancements come at a pivotal time. The company faces declining sales in China, regulatory scrutiny, and stagnating iPhone revenue, which makes up half of its overall sales. Investors, eager for a turnaround, see AI as a potential catalyst.

Charles Rinehart, Chief Investment Officer at Johnson Investment Counsel, emphasized the urgency, stating, “It’s important for them to start showing progress.” Moreover, Apple’s research-and-development spending has slowed, raising concerns about its innovation pace. Trip Miller from Gullane Capital Partners believes AI could rejuvenate Apple, stating, “AI is the thing that can get Apple out of the ditch.”

What’s Next?

If Apple successfully integrates compelling AI features into its iPhones, it could spur a new wave of upgrades, particularly among pandemic-era buyers due for a new device. Investors also anticipate potential service-revenue boosts from AI offerings, possibly through new subscription models.

Additionally, by partnering with external AI developers like OpenAI, Apple aims to leverage advanced capabilities while mitigating risks and costs associated with AI development. David Wagner from Aptus Capital Advisors noted, “Apple is passing off the liabilities of AI to a partner like OpenAI,” highlighting the strategic nature of these collaborations.
