JPMorgan Upgrades Meta to Overweight, Raises PT to $820 as Muse AI Agent Hits #3 in App Store

Tax-Loss Harvesting Surge: JPMorgan’s $15 Billion Windfall
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth upgraded Meta Platforms from neutral to overweight and raised his December 2027 price target from $640 to $820, implying more than 25% upside from Meta’s current price of ~$657, citing Muse — Meta’s newly launched AI agent — as proof that the company can convert its 4-billion-user distribution advantage into a durable consumer AI position.
  • Muse’s early traction is striking: it reached #3 in the US App Store on its second day and is generating usage at 10x the rate of Meta’s internal training cohorts — metrics that are dramatically accelerating Wall Street’s reassessment of Meta’s AI investment thesis after months of skepticism over the ROI of its aggressive infrastructure spending.
  • The upgrade comes after a sharp recovery in Meta shares: the stock is up 20% from its August low (aided by the $18B teen social media harm settlement removing a major legal overhang) and rose 6.6% on Wednesday alone as analysts praised Muse’s potential — but Meta remains essentially flat for 2026, badly lagging the Nasdaq 100’s 16% YTD gain, underscoring the gap that Muse needs to help close.
  • With the JPMorgan upgrade, more than 90% of Bloomberg-tracked analysts now hold buy-equivalent ratings on Meta with no sell ratings — a near-unanimous bullish stance that reflects growing conviction that the company’s frontier model development and AI product pipeline extend well beyond its advertising business into a broader consumer AI platform play.

What Happened?

JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth upgraded Meta Platforms from neutral to overweight Thursday, lifting his December 2027 price target from $640 to $820. The catalyst is Muse, Meta’s AI agent product launched earlier this week to handle personal tasks and organization on behalf of users. Muse reached #3 in the US App Store on its second day and is generating usage at 10x Meta’s internal training cohort benchmarks. Anmuth argued that Meta’s ~4 billion user base gives it a structural distribution advantage in consumer AI that other frontier model developers cannot replicate. Meta shares rose 1.5% in premarket trading Thursday, following a 6.6% gain Wednesday driven by initial Muse analyst enthusiasm. Despite the recent rally, Meta is approximately flat for 2026 versus a 16% gain for the Nasdaq 100, and delivered a disappointing Q3 revenue forecast in its late July earnings that amplified concerns about its heavy AI capex.

Why It Matters?

The Meta AI investment thesis has been contested all year: bulls argue that 4 billion users gives Meta an unmatched consumer AI distribution platform; bears argue that heavy infrastructure spending without clear monetization beyond ad targeting is destroying value. Muse is the first product that concretely bridges those camps — it’s not an incremental ad optimization tool but an agentic consumer product that competes directly with ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Apple Intelligence. App store rank #3 on day two, if it holds, would be one of the fastest large-app launches in recent memory. The 90%+ buy-rating consensus means that any further evidence of Muse’s retention and monetization potential will move price targets, not ratings — there is almost no room for further upgrades, which puts the pressure on fundamentals to catch up with the bullish narrative.

What’s Next?

The critical metric to watch is Muse retention at Day 7, Day 30, and Day 90 — app store rank on day two is a marketing story; monthly active users three months from now is a business story. Meta’s Q3 earnings (expected late October) will be the first opportunity to see whether Muse is producing any measurable signal in engagement or revenue, or whether it remains a top-of-funnel acquisition play. Anmuth’s $820 price target implies that the market will grant Meta credit for “frontier models and AI-driven products beyond advertising” — a significant valuation expansion that requires Muse and successor products to demonstrate durable, high-engagement use cases. The flat YTD performance versus the Nasdaq’s 16% gain means Meta has significant catching up to do if the AI thesis delivers.
