Manus Launches Agents With Their Own Email, Phone Number and Digital Wallet Months After Beijing Blocked Meta $2 Billion Deal

  • Manus, an AI startup founded in China and now based in Singapore, launched Manus 2.0 on Monday alongside Cue, a standalone platform letting users create and deploy personal agents. Manus 2.0 is designed to work faster and more independently across research, coding, website and presentation creation and other digital tools.
  • Cue agents can be given their own email address, phone number and digital wallet, and can interact with everyday services, with the company citing examples such as ordering food at a restaurant or holding a place in a queue.
  • Meta agreed to acquire Manus for $2 billion, but Beijing ordered the deal cancelled in April, forcing the company to remain independent. Meta has since had success with its own agent, Muse, which reached the top of app store charts after launching this month. Meta traded at 722.58, up 3.87%.
  • Manus was an early breakout in the current agent wave after its 2025 debut. It says it is building a team for products in the Chinese market and is in discussions with local model developers and ecosystem partners.

What Happened?

Cue is built on the same infrastructure as Manus and is aimed at personal task automation on behalf of users, positioning the company against Meta and other developers in what has become one of the most contested areas in technology.

Why It Matters?

The detail that matters is buried in a product description. An agent with its own email address, phone number and digital wallet is not a tool operating on a person account, it is a separate economic actor transacting with independent credentials. That is the same direction Coinbase x402 protocol points, letting agents pay for services in stablecoins within seconds without an account, card or human approval, and it now has Visa, Mastercard, Google, Amazon and Cloudflare among its foundation members. Multiple parties are assembling machine-to-machine commerce infrastructure at once, which suggests the industry regards it as settled that agents will transact directly. The unresolved questions are legal rather than technical. If an agent holds a wallet and a phone number, who is the accountholder of record, who bears liability for an erroneous or fraudulent transaction, and how do know-your-customer and anti-money-laundering requirements function when the counterparty is software. None of that has been addressed by regulators, and it arrives alongside warnings that agents could move household deposits automatically. For investors the commercial exposure sits with the intermediaries. An agent that orders food directly or holds a place in a queue is performing the function ordering platforms charge for, which is the same disintermediation that drove banks, insurers and booking sites lower last week. Manus itself is private with no listed route to invest, so the read-through is competitive pressure on Meta and on the platforms agents would route around. The geopolitics deserve a note too: Beijing blocking a $2 billion American acquisition of a Chinese AI startup, which then relocated to Singapore while building a China team, is a company deliberately straddling both markets days before the Trump and Xi summit.

What Next?

Watch whether Cue agents are actually granted payment credentials by banks and payment networks, since a wallet is only useful if funded and the onboarding requirements are unclear. Adoption data rather than launch announcements is what matters, and Muse has set the benchmark by topping app charts. Regulatory response is the variable with the largest range of outcomes, because agents holding independent financial credentials touch consumer protection, payments and anti-money-laundering rules simultaneously. Track whether Manus succeeds in re-entering the Chinese market through the local partnerships it describes, given that Beijing intervened to keep it out of American ownership. For Meta, the question is whether Muse maintains its lead now that a competitor it tried to buy is shipping comparable capability.
