SpaceXAI Plans a Unified Grok and X Subscription Spanning $8 to $100 a Month, Bundling AI With Checkmarks and Fewer Ads
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • SpaceXAI, the artificial intelligence unit of Elon Musk SpaceX, is considering an overhaul of subscription pricing for its Grok chatbot and the X social network, according to a document viewed by Bloomberg News. It plans to offer a unified subscription across both with four pricing tiers.
  • The range spans a free option carrying stricter usage limits on Grok up to a $100 monthly Ultra tier aimed at power users, which includes access to Grok Bot, the company AI agent product.
  • A new $8 monthly lite plan would bundle Grok access with a verified checkmark and reduced advertising on X, combining AI capability with the status and ad-reduction features the platform previously sold on their own.
  • SpaceX, now publicly traded and quoted at 151.55, is competing with Anthropic and OpenAI to build more advanced AI offerings while pursuing business customers. Representatives for the company did not respond to requests for comment.

What Happened?

The plan would merge what have been separate subscription propositions, the social network and the chatbot, into a single tiered product line.

Why It Matters?

The $8 tier is the structurally interesting one because it uses AI as a bundling lever rather than as a product. X previously sold subscriptions on the basis of a verified checkmark and fewer advertisements, and adding Grok access gives the company a reason to charge for a package that was previously justified by status alone. That is a route to lifting average revenue per user on a social network, and it is a different business from selling AI on its own merits. The 12.5 times spread between the $8 and $100 tiers indicates the company is trying to serve two unrelated customers with one subscription, casual social users at the bottom and AI power users at the top. Unifying the two has a consequence for anyone valuing the company now that it is listed. Once social and AI revenue arrive through a single subscription, separating what customers are paying for becomes difficult, which obscures the unit economics of the AI business at exactly the point investors would want to assess them. Bundled pricing tends to flatter the newer product. There is also a mismatch between this pricing and the stated competitive objective. The article frames the battle with Anthropic and OpenAI as a contest for business customers, while this structure is entirely consumer-facing, so the consumer tiers appear to be funding or supporting an enterprise push rather than constituting it. At $100 a month the Ultra tier sits at the upper end of consumer AI pricing, which is a test of whether agent products command that level outside a corporate budget.

What Next?

Confirmation of the pricing and a launch date are the immediate items, since this is a document under consideration rather than an announced product. Watch how many X subscribers move to the $8 lite tier, because conversion there is the clearest measure of whether AI access changes the value proposition of a social subscription. Take-up of the $100 Ultra tier will indicate whether consumer demand exists for agent products at that price. For investors, any disclosure separating AI revenue from social network revenue in future reporting would be valuable and is not guaranteed under a unified subscription. The enterprise push against Anthropic and OpenAI is the larger commercial question, and consumer pricing tells you little about progress there.
