Chinese AI Models Generate Only 10% of OpenAI/Anthropic Revenue; Valuation Multiples Appear ‘Exorbitant’ for DeepSeek, Moonshot
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • China’s artificial intelligence models are generating only about 10% of the revenue reported by OpenAI and Anthropic, according to research firm Rhodium Group analysis of annual recurring revenue (ARR) figures. DeepSeek reported lowest ARR at $500 million; Moonshot at $1 billion; Z.ai at $1.8 billion (raised to $3B by year-end); Alibaba at $2.4 billion; ByteDance at $4 billion. This compares to OpenAI’s $40 billion and Anthropic’s $65 billion in estimated ARR.
  • Critically, the revenue gap is not reflected in valuations: Chinese startups trade at 50x-163x valuation-to-revenue multiples (Moonshot and DeepSeek) versus 34x-21x for OpenAI and Anthropic respectively. Rhodium said valuations for Moonshot and DeepSeek appear “exorbitant at present.” The mismatch raises questions about whether Chinese AI labs’ equity valuations are sustainable given financing gaps and lower pricing power versus closed-source US models.
  • Chinese AI models operate on open-source basis—anyone with sufficient hardware can download and run independently. US models (OpenAI, Anthropic) are closed; cost per task is far higher. Chinese labs are exploring ways to increase revenue share from third parties offering model access. The open-source model limits monetization compared to proprietary US approaches, requiring Chinese labs to scale at lower margins.
  • Z.ai raised ARR forecast to $3 billion by year-end (up from $2.4B), boosting stock 5%+ Thursday. However, Chinese AI stocks have been volatile: Z.ai tumbled from summer highs to spring levels; MiniMax shares struggled to hold above IPO gains. Moonshot filed confidentially for Hong Kong IPO; DeepSeek also preparing for listing. Rhodium notes financing gap means Chinese labs “will be heavily dependent upon favorable equity market climate.”

What Happened?

Rhodium Group released analysis showing China’s AI models combined generate only 10% of OpenAI and Anthropic’s revenue. DeepSeek reported $500M ARR; Moonshot $1B; Z.ai $1.8B (raised to $3B by year-end); Alibaba $2.4B; ByteDance $4B. OpenAI generates $40B ARR; Anthropic $65B. However, Chinese startups trade at 50x-163x valuation-to-revenue multiples versus 34x-21x for US competitors, suggesting valuations are disconnected from revenue fundamentals. Chinese models operate open-source with lower pricing power; US models are closed and command premium rates. Z.ai raised year-end ARR forecast, boosting stock 5%+. Moonshot and DeepSeek are filing for IPOs despite revenue-valuation mismatches.

Why It Matters?

For Nvidia shareholders, the analysis validates concerns that DeepSeek and other Chinese open-source models could commoditize AI inference costs, reducing demand for Nvidia chips for deployment. For Microsoft shareholders, lower-cost Chinese AI alternatives threaten OpenAI’s enterprise market share and MSFT’s Azure AI pricing power. For Chinese AI investors (Z.ai, Moonshot, DeepSeek backers), the revenue-valuation gap suggests future IPOs will face scrutiny on how companies justify current valuations. For Alibaba and ByteDance, the analysis shows Chinese tech giants have meaningful AI revenue but at lower multiples and margins than US pure-plays. For the AI industry, the mismatch suggests either Chinese models will need to increase pricing power or valuations will compress as they approach public markets.

What’s Next?

Monitor Moonshot and DeepSeek IPO filings; if they proceed with Hong Kong listings at current valuation multiples, it would signal confidence that revenue will scale rapidly to justify 50x-163x ratios. Watch Z.ai’s trajectory toward $3B ARR; if the company achieves guidance, it could validate that Chinese models can grow revenue faster than currently reflected. Track pricing dynamics for Chinese open-source models; if cost-per-task compression accelerates, it could validate Nvidia’s concerns about inference commoditization. Monitor US AI company earnings for China competitive commentary; if OpenAI or Anthropic cite pricing pressure from Chinese models, it would validate the threat. Also watch Chinese government AI funding; if Beijing increases direct frontier lab financing, it could offset the “financing gap” Rhodium identified. Finally, track Alibaba and ByteDance AI revenue growth; if enterprise customers migrate from OpenAI/Anthropic to lower-cost Chinese alternatives, it would validate the displacement thesis.

Affected Tickers & Coins: ZLAB, NVDA, MSFT, GOOGL, BABA
