Gold Slides Below $4,270 as Middle East Oil Disruptions Push Fed Rate-Hike Expectations to 95%
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • Gold fell as much as 0.8% to trade below $4,270 an ounce on Monday as traders priced a 95% probability of a Fed rate hike this week and energy prices spiked on Middle East supply disruptions. Bullion has declined 4% in September after trading above $4,700 in late August, erasing summer gains as expectations shifted from rate cuts to rate hikes. The 10-year Treasury yield climbed to its highest level in almost two decades, adding pressure to non-yielding precious metals.
  • Saudi Arabia’s critical East-West pipeline remains offline following attacks last week, removing millions of barrels per day from global markets and forcing crude to climb toward $104. The disruption exacerbates inflation expectations by constraining supply at precisely the moment traders are pricing aggressive Fed tightening. Oil’s rise validates inflation concerns that justify the Fed’s shift toward restrictive policy, creating a feedback loop that pressures gold further.
  • The Fed is expected to raise rates 25 basis points this week, marking the first increase in three years and triggering a potential multi-hike cycle if inflation remains sticky. Higher borrowing costs directly reduce gold’s appeal as it generates no yield, meaning investors choosing between 10-year Treasuries at 5%+ and gold at 0% will increasingly favor government debt. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh signaled hawkish intent at Jackson Hole, validating market expectations for tightening.
  • Despite near-term headwinds from rising yields and rate-hike expectations, many investors remain long-term bullion buyers, betting that gold will regrind higher as geopolitical tensions and portfolio hedging demand reassert. The Saudi pipeline attack demonstrates persistent Middle East vulnerability, which historically supports gold as insurance against supply shocks and escalation risk. The question is whether inflation and rate fears will overwhelm hedging demand before the Fed tightening cycle runs its course.

What Happened?

Gold fell 0.8% to $4,266.60 per ounce on Monday as traders priced a 95% probability of a Fed rate hike this week. The decline extends September’s 4% selloff, erasing August’s rally above $4,700. The dual drivers of weakness are higher oil prices—Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline remains offline after last week’s attacks, pushing crude toward $104—and rising Treasury yields, with the 10-year reaching its highest level in almost two decades. Silver fell 0.7% to $62.79, while platinum and palladium also declined. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index rose 0.2%, further pressuring commodities denominated in dollars.

Why It Matters?

For portfolio allocators and precious metals investors, the near-term backdrop for gold is decidedly unfavorable: rising real yields (the 10-year Treasury minus inflation expectations) make zero-yielding bullion less attractive relative to government debt, while Fed tightening typically pressures commodities broadly. The Saudi pipeline disruption, however, signals persistent geopolitical risk that has historically supported gold as a portfolio hedge. The tension between inflation-driven Fed tightening and supply shocks will determine whether gold stabilizes or breaks lower toward $4,100-4,000 support levels. For macro investors, the oil-gold relationship has historically been inverse at the onset of recession (higher rates and falling growth), but currently both are rallying—a sign that commodity demand destruction has not yet set in, merely a transitional repricing of rate expectations.

What’s Next?

Watch the Fed’s decision Wednesday and Warsh’s press conference for clues on the pace of future rate hikes—a hawkish hold or aggressive forward guidance will pressure gold further toward $4,100. Monitor Saudi statements on East-West pipeline restoration; if the kingdom announces repairs extending beyond October, oil prices could spike above $110, which would create another inflation shock and either accelerate Fed tightening or force recalibration of rate expectations. Track the 10-year Treasury yield closely; if it breaks above 5.1%, it could test $4,000 gold support. Finally, watch for investor flows into gold ETFs and central bank purchases—if major institutions use weakness to accumulate, it would signal conviction that hedging value outweighs near-term yield headwinds.
