Hezbollah Rejects U.S.-Brokered Lebanon Truce as US-Iran Nuclear Talks Stall

Iran Is Running the 1980s Tanker War Playbook Again — This Time With Drones

  • Hezbollah rejected the U.S.-brokered Lebanon ceasefire announced Wednesday, leaving the truce without the consent of the key armed party it was designed to restrain.
  • Iran’s foreign minister said US-Iran nuclear negotiations have stalled; Trump countered by calling talks “final” — a contradiction that reflects the gulf between public messaging and diplomatic reality.
  • Iran fired missiles and drones at Kuwait and Bahrain on Wednesday — killing one person at Kuwait’s main airport — after the US struck an Iranian oil tanker, marking the worst burst of violence since the April ceasefire.
  • Brent crude dipped to around $97 a barrel on ceasefire optimism, but the fragile diplomatic picture suggests oil market relief may be premature.

What Happened?

The fragile US-Iran ceasefire entered its most turbulent phase yet after Hezbollah rejected the U.S.-brokered Lebanon truce announced Wednesday. The agreement — which required Israel to halt Beirut strikes and Hezbollah to withdraw from border areas — was announced without Hezbollah’s participation, and the Iran-backed militia formally rejected it Thursday. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the US-Iran nuclear negotiations had produced “no tangible progress,” even as Trump publicly described talks as being in their “final” stages. The week’s violence was the worst since the April 8 ceasefire: Iran fired missiles and drones at Kuwait and Bahrain, killing one person at Kuwait’s main airport, after the U.S. struck an Iranian oil tanker.

Why It Matters?

The gap between Trump’s public optimism and the diplomatic reality is widening. Iran is using Hezbollah — which it funds and arms — as leverage in the nuclear talks, insisting any deal requires a Lebanon settlement. But Hezbollah’s rejection of the U.S.-brokered truce means that lever is now openly resisting Washington’s framework. Lebanon’s President said the ceasefire could go into effect in 24 hours if conditions were met — but Hezbollah’s veto makes that timeline implausible. Meanwhile, the House voted this week to limit Trump’s Iran war powers, adding domestic pressure. The broader ceasefire is increasingly a legal fiction: “In that part of the world, ceasefire is when you’re shooting in a more moderate manner,” Trump himself said Wednesday.

What’s Next?

Trump spoke Wednesday with Qatar’s Emir, who emphasized “political and diplomatic solutions.” Brent crude dipped on ceasefire optimism but the market may be getting ahead of the diplomatic reality. The key near-term question is whether Hezbollah’s rejection prompts Iran to formally walk away from the nuclear talks — or whether it’s a bargaining tactic designed to extract more U.S. concessions. Iran’s nuclear risk, according to Western officials citing new IAEA data, is now higher than before the conflict began — adding urgency to a negotiation that shows no clear path to resolution.
