Hike Odds Hit 50% After the Hot CPI Print, Then Fell to 29% as the AI Selloff Did the Tightening Instead

  • The 10-year Treasury yield fell eight basis points to 5.08%, extending a pullback from a recent peak of 5.36%, while gold rose 1%. Bitcoin dropped more than 2% to $82,316, with XRP, ether and solana falling further.
  • Rate expectations moved the opposite way to what a hot inflation print implies. CME fed funds futures now price a 29% chance of a move into the 4% to 4.25% range this month, having briefly approached 50% immediately after Wednesday’s CPI report, with the balance favouring rates staying at 3.75% to 4%.
  • This is a growth scare rather than a crypto event. Copper, a standard barometer of global activity, fell nearly 1% after a 1.6% decline the previous day, Asian stocks were dragged down by a rout in Korean chipmakers, and Nasdaq futures and risk-sensitive currency pairs also declined.
  • Bitcoin is trading as a risk asset, not a haven, falling while gold rises. That is the clearest available test of the argument that the two are the same debasement trade, and they separated under stress.

What Happened?

InvestingLive analyst Giuseppe Dellamotta described it as feeling like a stagflationary environment where risk assets and the dollar underperform while gold outperforms. Thursday’s producer price index is the next reading on inflation in the pipeline. Analysts at 10x Research said they still prefer holding bitcoin through the AI unwind, but only while it stays above $78,000, and prefer using ether as a hedge for bitcoin long positions. Separately, BlackRock chief executive Larry Fink said companies are pouring so much money into AI data centres that any attempt to slow it could hurt the US economy rather than just the stock market, and raised concerns over $40 trillion of national debt. Binance is shutting the bitcoin mining pool it launched in April 2020, which once handled 2.3% of network hashrate, after a 65% decline.

Why It Matters?

Markets received hotter-than-expected inflation and concluded the Federal Reserve will do less, which only makes sense once you see the mechanism. Bonds are rallying because equities are falling, not because the inflation outlook improved, and an AI selloff large enough to destroy significant wealth tightens financial conditions on its own. In effect the market is doing the Federal Reserve’s work, which reduces the need for the committee to act. That loop explains why odds halved from 50% to 29% within a day of a print that argued for tightening, and it means the rate path now depends as much on equity market behaviour as on the inflation data. Fink’s warning and Goolsbee’s describe the same phenomenon from opposite ends, and taken together they are uncomfortable. The Chicago Fed president says the AI buildout may be overheating the economy; the head of the world’s largest asset manager says slowing it could damage the economy. If both are right, policymakers face spending that is inflationary while it continues and recessionary if it stops, which is not a problem interest rates solve cleanly. For investors it means AI capital expenditure has become a macroeconomic variable rather than a sector story. The breadth is what distinguishes this from an AI-specific unwind. Copper falling two days running, Korean chipmakers routing, risk currencies weakening and bitcoin dropping while gold rises is a coordinated reduction in risk exposure across asset classes. Bitcoin’s behaviour is worth noting given the argument advanced this week that it and gold are two stages of the same debasement trade. Under actual stress they moved in opposite directions, which supports the research finding that neither qualifies as a conventional haven, and specifically that bitcoin continues to trade with risk assets rather than against them.

What Next?

The producer price index is the immediate data point and a hot reading would test whether the market maintains its benign rate view. The Federal Reserve meets October 27 and 28 with 29% priced for a move, so the statement language matters more than the decision. Watch copper and Korean semiconductor shares as the cleanest non-US reads on whether this is a broad growth scare or an AI-specific unwind. For bitcoin, 10x Research identifies $78,000 as their threshold, and the correlation with equities rather than gold is the structural feature to monitor. Fink’s framing of AI spending as macroeconomically load-bearing is the argument most likely to shape how policymakers discuss it.
