North Korea’s AI-Powered Hackers Account for 89% of This Year’s Crypto Hack Losses, as a Unit of About a Dozen Is Blamed for the $6.3 Billion Binance Heist

  • A small unit is behind a record haul. The North Korean group TraderTraitor, which the FBI blames for the $6.3 billion Binance hack, may have only a dozen or so members, experts told Bloomberg, even as North Korea maintains a thousands-strong hacker army.
  • North Korea dominates crypto theft. The country’s hackers are believed to be responsible for 89% of reported crypto hack losses this year, according to Chainalysis, and TraderTraitor’s previous largest hack was 2025’s $1.5 billion Bybit heist.
  • AI is speeding up attacks. With new AI tools, “the barriers to such skills have dropped significantly, while the speed at which these operations can be carried out has increased tremendously,” said Park Seong-su of Zscaler, and TRM Labs’ Nick Carlsen said novel techniques suggest the group is making ample use of AI.
  • The breach started with one laptop. Binance said an initial investigation found a compromised laptop belonging to an engineer as a point of breach, and hackers stole $6.36 billion in just 20 minutes, worth nearly 20% of North Korea’s estimated annual economic output; roughly $2.8 billion has been frozen since.

What Happened?

TraderTraitor uses a strategy cybersecurity experts call Big Game Hunting, targeting high-value crypto businesses, learning their infrastructure and then tampering with it or with fund transfer processes to execute large thefts. The group combines top-tier hacking with social engineering, identifying employees with high-level access and pursuing them with things like lucrative job offers. “Their bread and butter is the human part,” Carlsen said. Bloomberg reports the revenues could be funding nearly half of North Korea’s banned weapons programs.

Why It Matters?

For crypto investors, the takeaway is that exchange security risk is concentrated in a sophisticated, state-backed adversary that is getting faster with AI, which raises the stakes for custody practices, employee security and stablecoin freezes. Crypto cash now dwarfs North Korea’s other income sources, such as trade with China and its military relationship with Russia, so the incentive to keep targeting exchanges is strong. United Nations experts said in 2024 that cyber thefts and illicit finance could fund about 40% of its weapons of mass destruction programs.

What’s Next?

Exchanges are beefing up security, especially for employees with key access, and investors will watch whether more stolen funds can be frozen and whether other platforms are targeted. Experts warn the proceeds are now supporting conventional forces, including new naval vessels and drone technology, raising the geopolitical stakes for the US, which has 28,500 troops stationed on the Korean peninsula.
