Oil Drops as Much as 2.8%, Pushing WTI Below $100, After Vance Reportedly Reaches Out to Iran, but Post-Midterm Strike Fears Keep Brent Near $113

  • Crude retreated Thursday. Brent futures fell 2% to $112.99 a barrel and US West Texas Intermediate slipped 2.8% to $99.91 as prospects of renewed peace talks eased supply fears.
  • Diplomacy drove the move. The Wall Street Journal reported that Vice President JD Vance reached out to Iranian Security Council chief Mohsen Rezaei to restart negotiations, and Qatari mediators reportedly offered a fresh proposal, though a senior Iranian official rejected the proposals as unacceptable.
  • Risks remain elevated. Investors are weighing the threat of Houthi attacks and the possibility of US military action against Iran after the Nov. 3 midterm elections, which has kept crude prices high.
  • Oil is now a Fed story. Interactive Brokers senior economist José Torres said “pricey crude remains the predominant driver of above-target inflation,” and that WTI falling toward $70 a barrel could materially strengthen the case for eventual rate cuts.

What Happened?

Prices fell after the Journal’s report, which cited US officials and people familiar with the discussions. Iran’s foreign minister said on X that Tehran remained open to diplomatic efforts and raised the possibility of accelerating a proposed seven-day peace plan if an agreement is reached. The persistent threat of supply disruptions has kept crude elevated and complicated the outlook for global monetary policy.

Why It Matters?

Energy is feeding directly into US inflation, with September PCE data showing gasoline and other energy goods up 9.2% in the month and headline PCE inflation at 3.6%. Torres argued that inflation concentrated in energy justifies a more patient Fed, warning that hiking too aggressively into an oil supply shock could weaken employment and worsen credit vulnerabilities. That makes oil headlines a key input for bond yields and rate expectations.

What’s Next?

Watch whether the Vance outreach turns into formal talks and whether the seven-day peace plan gains traction. Torres said “there could be a geopolitical resolution right around the corner,” which could shift the Fed’s focus away from more hikes, but any escalation after the midterms could quickly reverse Thursday’s drop.
