- Canton Strategic Holdings, listed on Nasdaq as CNTN, agreed to make its common stock available on TSV LLC, a tokenized stock venue on the Canton Network, with trading expected as soon as Monday, Nov. 2.
- The company is sponsoring its own tokenization. It hired SEC-registered onchain transfer agent Fairmint to issue the tokens and keep official ownership records, which lets TSV skip the 30-day issuer notice-and-objection process that applies when unaffiliated parties tokenize a stock.
- That could put TSV ahead of OKX-ICE. The joint venture between OKX and NYSE parent Intercontinental Exchange has drawn objections from 33 companies to its proposed third-party listings, while TSV filed its initial venue notice on Sept. 23, before OKX-ICE’s Oct. 4 notice, and its waiting period has already elapsed.
- Both venues plan to operate under the SEC’s five-year Innovation Exemption, which allows qualifying platforms to trade tokenized US stocks through permissioned automated market maker pools. TSV will use the Tradecraft protocol for round-the-clock trading with atomic settlement.
What Happened?
CNTN announced the arrangement Thursday. Fairmint will administer transfer compliance, and token holders will receive the same rights and privileges as investors holding CNTN shares through Nasdaq, the company said. TSV CEO Ali Abrar said the venue was the first to formally notify the SEC of its intent to operate a tokenized securities venue and “wanted our first listing to set the standard.”
Why It Matters?
The listing is an early test of a different path to putting equities onchain: getting the issuer on board upfront instead of tokenizing shares without its consent. That model requires cooperation from the company and its transfer agent, but removes the risk that the issuer blocks trading, the issue that has dogged OKX-ICE as large companies opt out. Whichever venue trades first will set a reference point for how the SEC’s tokenization exemption works in practice.
What’s Next?
Watch whether CNTN trading begins Monday as planned and how much volume and liquidity the venue attracts in round-the-clock trading. Investors will also track whether other issuers choose to sponsor their own tokenized shares, and how OKX-ICE responds to the mounting objections.
