S and P 500 Rises a Fourth Session Toward Its First Record Since August as Crude Falls to $94 on a Hormuz Reopening Offer

S&P 500’s Big Earnings Test: Will Tech Slowdown Derail Gains?
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • The S and P 500 rose 0.2% at Tuesday open for a fourth consecutive advance, approaching its first record since August. The Nasdaq 100 added 0.4% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was little changed, with both major gauges having closed within 1% of records on Monday.
  • Crude fell to $94.18 after reports from Japan that Iranian officials proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz within seven days. Saudi Arabia also expects to restart its East-West pipeline, which carries 7 million barrels a day, this week. Energy shares fell broadly.
  • The rally still rests on Meta Muse AI product, which drove Monday sharp advance in CPU makers including Intel. Christopher Murphy, co-head of derivatives strategy at Susquehanna, said the reception reignited enthusiasm across AI hardware and that options flows indicate upside chasing.
  • Economic data pointed the other way. US private payrolls rose an average of 20,000 a week over the four weeks to September 5, and the Philadelphia Fed reported that general regional business activity slipped.

What Happened?

Matt Maley, chief market strategist at Miller Tabak, said the technology sector ability to keep advancing should remain the most important factor for equity direction over the next few weeks. Tuesday action was more restrained than Monday, and a chipmaker rally in Europe and Asia stalled overnight as investors declined to chase gains after recent volatility. Alibaba separately unveiled what it described as China most powerful AI chip. Emily Bowersock Hill, chief executive of Bowersock Capital Partners, said her firm believes the year gains are already in and has cut its S and P 500 target to 7,800 because rising rates weigh on stocks. President Trump addresses the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, with traders watching for a possible meeting with Iranian leadership on the sidelines. Quest Diagnostics and Labcorp are in focus after the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services published preliminary Medicare payment rates for lab services.

Why It Matters?

The market is pricing a diplomatic proposal as though it were a completed event. Crude has fallen from above $107 earlier this month to $94.18, and the proximate cause is an Iranian offer to reopen Hormuz in seven days that has not yet been acted on. That roughly 12% decline is doing far more for equities than any AI product, because it lowers inflation expectations and yields simultaneously. It also means the index approaching a record sits on a foundation that a single reversal in Tehran or Riyadh removes. The Saudi pipeline restart is the more solid element, since 7 million barrels a day of restored capacity is physical rather than declaratory. Two warnings sit inside the bullish commentary. Murphy description of upside chasing in options flows is a caution rather than an endorsement, as buying calls into a rally is characteristically late-stage behaviour that amplifies moves in both directions. And Bowersock Hill is cutting her target on the same day the index nears a record, on the argument that rates cap further gains, which is the position the market is currently trading against. The data supports her more than the tape does: private payrolls averaging 20,000 a week is soft, and the Philadelphia Fed showing regional activity slipping points to an economy weakening while equities make new highs. Alibaba chip announcement deserves attention beyond the sector, arriving days before the Trump and Xi summit where export controls are expected on the agenda, which makes it a negotiating signal as much as a product launch.

What Next?

The seven-day Hormuz timeline is now a dated catalyst, so whether that reopening actually occurs is the single most important variable for both oil and equities over the coming week. Trump address to the General Assembly on Tuesday and any sideline meeting with Iranian officials are the immediate diplomatic markers. Watch confirmation that the Saudi East-West pipeline has genuinely resumed at capacity, since 7 million barrels a day returning is the concrete supply event behind the price move. On equities, the record high is close enough that a break would be read as confirmation, though it would rest on the oil assumption rather than on earnings. Track whether the stalled chip rally in Europe and Asia resumes, as that indicates whether international investors share the American enthusiasm for the Muse thesis. Quest Diagnostics and Labcorp warrant attention once the CMS preliminary rates are analysed in detail.
