Stellantis Rules Out a Breakup While Its Shares Fall 60%, the Worst in the Stoxx 600
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • Chief executive Antonio Filosa told Bloomberg Television at the Paris Motor Show that separating European brands such as Citroen and Fiat from Jeep and Ram is not plausible at all, saying the strategy rests on all 14 brands playing their unique role and on technologies including powertrains and computing architecture being developed globally for every model.
  • Investors have reached a different conclusion. Milan-listed shares are down nearly 60% this year, making Stellantis the worst-performing stock in Europe’s Stoxx 600, and it traded at 4.43.
  • Filosa is simultaneously reviewing how spending is allocated across brands, many of which serve the same mass-market customers, which sits awkwardly beside a defence of the structure that creates the overlap.
  • The substantive strategy is Chinese partnership. The new all-electric Citroen 2CV is built on technology from Chinese partner Leapmotor, the company has announced plans to deepen ties with Dongfeng Motor, and Filosa has said these partnerships address excess European capacity without closing plants.

What Happened?

Stellantis is showing more than 60 vehicles across eight brands in Paris, including nine concept cars, on a stand roughly the size of an American football field, marking a reversal for a group that had cut much of its car show spending. Filosa said the company needs to keep working on execution and that after losing money again last year it has already crossed the point to be profitable again. He said Stellantis is not at all considering selling its Maserati marque. The group was created by the 2021 merger of Fiat Chrysler and France’s PSA.

Why It Matters?

The Chinese partnerships are the real story and they carry a tension nobody involved wants to name. Stellantis is using Leapmotor technology to underpin a Citroen, deepening ties with Dongfeng, and presenting this as the way to fill European factories without shutting them, at the same time as European carmakers back an EU plan to cap Chinese hybrids. A European champion building its electric vehicles on Chinese platforms while its industry lobbies to restrict Chinese competition is a coherent commercial position and a difficult political one, and it is more consequential to the company’s future than any discussion of brand separation. The breakup question is being answered by the share price rather than by the chief executive. A 60% decline and the worst performance in the Stoxx 600 means the market has concluded the current configuration is not working. Filosa’s defence is the standard conglomerate argument, that shared engineering across powertrains and computing architecture justifies the structure, and that argument holds only while the savings from the common platform exceed the cost of the complexity. Fourteen brands competing for the same mass-market buyers is precisely the complexity, and he is reviewing it. The profitability claim is the statement that matters most and it is unverifiable as made. Saying the company has already crossed the point to be profitable again, after losing money last year, comes without a figure, a timeframe or a definition, and for a stock down 60% that is the assertion investors most need substantiated. Note also the contrast between a football-field stand with nine concept cars and the linked reports of lowered Italian output forecasts and temporary plant halts in France.

What Next?

Full results are where the profitability claim will be tested against actual numbers. Watch the EU decision on capping Chinese hybrids, since Stellantis is both a beneficiary of protection and a user of Chinese technology, and the policy outcome affects it in both directions. The strategic review of brand spending is the live internal process, and any consolidation or repositioning of the 14 brands would signal that the structure is changing regardless of what is ruled out publicly. European capacity utilisation and the pace of plant halts are the operating measures to follow, and union forecasts for Italian output have already been lowered.
