Ten of Eleven S&P 500 Sectors Are Decelerating, and Beats Have Been Rewarded Below Average in Four of the Last Six Quarters

  • Third quarter estimates look solid, but 10 of the 11 S and P 500 sectors are expected to post a slower pace of earnings growth than the previous quarter, according to Bank of America data. Healthcare is the only sector expected to see a pickup.
  • The path ahead shows a clear peak. Analysts expect index earnings growth of 25% in the third quarter of 2026, rising to 28% in the fourth, then decelerating to 18% in the first half of 2027, a ten-point slowdown, with stocks sitting at records.
  • Investors have become less forgiving. In four of the past six reporting cycles, the one-day reaction to earnings beats has been below historical median levels while companies missing estimates faced steeper than usual penalties, according to Andrew Tyler of JPMorgan.
  • Earnings season has been reliably rewarding until now. Since the start of 2021 the S and P 500 has delivered a 15.2% annualised return during reporting periods, well above its long-term average, which means the pattern is well known and partly priced.

What Happened?

Luca Paolini, chief strategist at Pictet Asset Management, said there are early signs earnings momentum may be peaking and that with the bar set so high, even modest disappointments could trigger brutal market reactions. Bank of America strategists including Savita Subramanian wrote that healthy third quarter beats are expected but further upside likely depends on confidence that strong growth extends into 2027. Early bank results have been mixed, with JPMorgan posting a surprise drop in fixed-income trading revenue, Citi’s fixed-income traders beating while rivals missed, and Goldman’s equity traders delivering strongly while credit and rates fell short.

Why It Matters?

The reaction asymmetry is the most actionable fact here and it sits at the end of the article. When beats are rewarded below the historical median and misses are punished more severely than usual, the distribution of outcomes is skewed against holders: less upside for being right, more downside for being wrong. That has now held in four of the last six quarters, which makes it a regime rather than noise. It argues for thinking about position sizing into individual prints rather than about direction, and it is the practical consequence of expectations already embedded in prices. The deceleration is broad rather than concentrated. Ten of eleven sectors slowing in the third quarter means this is not a single industry normalising, and the forecast path makes the fourth quarter the peak at 28% before falling to 18% by the first half of 2027. Equities at record levels are pricing the top of that curve. None of this is bearish in isolation, since 25% growth is genuinely strong, but it changes what the market needs from management: not results, which are expected, but confidence about 2027, which is harder to supply. Healthcare being the sole accelerating sector is a concrete rotation signal that top-down commentary tends to lose. The early bank results illustrate the dynamic precisely. Three large institutions produced a mix of beats and misses across different desks, which is normal, and in a market this demanding the misses carry more weight than the beats. The 15.2% annualised return during reporting windows since 2021 explains why so much is expected, and Paolini’s warning is simply the other side of that record.

What Next?

The remainder of bank reporting and then the broader season will test whether the asymmetry Tyler describes persists. Listen for 2027 guidance rather than third quarter figures, since Subramanian identifies that as the condition for further upside. Watch whether healthcare’s relative acceleration draws flows, as it is the only sector where the direction of growth is improving. Consumer price data and the Federal Reserve meeting later this month set the discount rate against which all of these earnings are valued, with a hike fully priced by year end. For positioning, the practical implication of being punished more for misses than rewarded for beats is to size accordingly rather than to predict.
