A $72 Billion Conglomerate Is Slowing Its AI Spending Because Its Businesses Have No Common Use Case

  • Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, said artificial intelligence investments will come a little more gradually than the group thought a year ago, adding that there is no need to act out of a sense of FOMO. His reason is operational: multiple businesses cannot follow a uniform strategy for adopting the technology.
  • The group generated $72 billion of revenue in the year to March, operates in 41 countries and derived 42% of sales from outside India as of June, which Birla says means any significant global event affects the business somewhere.
  • Its listed businesses span metals through Hindalco, cement through UltraTech, non-bank lending through Aditya Birla Capital and retail through Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail.
  • Expansion continues regardless. The group is entering paints with Birla Opus, building materials through the Birla Pivot marketplace, jewellery with Indriya under Novel Jewels and electric cables under Ultravolt, and acquired Shell’s renewable energy assets for $1.8 billion.

What Happened?

Birla was speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi. He said that you either grow or go down and cannot remain in equilibrium, and that the group has been investing constantly in existing and new businesses. He cited unpredictable US tariff and trade policy, the Middle East war and shifting demand across major economies as making investment decisions harder.

Why It Matters?

The AI comment is the most useful thing here and the reasoning behind it is better than the sentiment. A group spanning metals, cement, lending, fashion, paints and jewellery has no single AI application, so enterprise-wide adoption does not work and each business requires separate evaluation. That is the practical constraint most adoption forecasts ignore, because they model spending capacity rather than applicability. It is also a notably different posture from the one driving the capital markets, where SpaceX is seeking $40 billion for chips, hyperscalers have shifted to shorter-dated issuance to fund the buildout and an AI cloud provider is placing a $5 billion loan at 11%. When the chairman of a $72 billion industrial group says he will go more slowly than planned a year ago, that is a data point on where real-economy adoption sits relative to the infrastructure being built for it. The global footprint produces a specific kind of exposure worth understanding. With 42% of sales outside India across 41 countries, the group faces US tariff policy, the unresolved India trade negotiation, the energy shock and shifting regional demand simultaneously through different subsidiaries. Geographic diversification of that breadth stops reducing risk when the shocks are global, and Birla’s remark that any significant event reaches the business somewhere is the honest description of that. There is a tension between the stated caution and the activity. Birla says investment decisions are tougher while the group enters paints, building materials, jewellery and cables and buys $1.8 billion of renewable assets. His framing, that a company either grows or declines with no stable middle, is the conglomerate thesis stated plainly, and it is the same proposition Stellantis is defending with 14 brands while its shares fall 60%. Whether breadth is resilience or complexity is the question both are testing.

What Next?

Watch whether other large industrial groups echo the slower AI timetable, since a gap between infrastructure investment and enterprise adoption is the condition under which AI capital spending gets reassessed. The group’s new category entries in paints and building materials are the near-term operational tests, given they challenge established incumbents. For Indian corporates generally, the unresolved US trade negotiation and the new law permitting tariffs of up to 100% on buyers of Russian oil remain the external risks, alongside the suspension of residency sponsorship affecting Indian IT services firms.
