Ripple Adds XRP and RLUSD Support to Stripe-Tempo AI Payments Protocol; Developer Kit Targets Machine-Initiated Transactions
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • Ripple has expanded its XRP Ledger developer kit to support the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP), a payment standard co-authored by Stripe and Tempo, enabling AI agents to automatically pay for data, computing, and online services using XRP and RLUSD stablecoins. Version 1.1 of the XRPL AI Starter Kit also integrates Open Wallet Standard for managing wallets across multiple blockchains. RippleX head of product Jazzi Cooper stated “Our job is to make XRP and RLUSD first-class options wherever developers are building.”
  • The MPP standard allows AI agents to pay-as-they-work: a service responds with a price, agent authorizes payment, service delivers. XRP payment channels enable session-based payments where an agent deposits XRP once and runs hundreds of queries without putting each transaction on-chain. Individual payments already support RLUSD, but session features currently require XRP; Ripple plans to add stablecoins to payment channels via proposed ledger upgrade.
  • Ripple is backing both MPP (Stripe/Tempo standard) and x402 (web payments standard added in June), rather than betting on a single standard. This multi-standard approach positions XRP/RLUSD to capture market share wherever developers build AI payment services. However, USDC currently dominates the AI payments market; Ripple’s developer kit aims to position XRP/RLUSD as competitive alternatives for machine-initiated transactions.
  • The integration represents significant strategic move for Ripple: building infrastructure for AI agents to autonomously transact in XRP and RLUSD. No customers are currently using the MPP integration commercially, and no payment volumes are disclosed. Success depends on developer adoption and whether AI agents/services accept XRP/RLUSD over USDC and other stablecoins.

What Happened?

Ripple released version 1.1 of the XRP Ledger AI Starter Kit, adding support for the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) created by Stripe and Tempo. The update enables AI agents to pay for online services using XRP and RLUSD stablecoins, with integrated Open Wallet Standard for multi-chain wallet management. The developer kit supports both MPP and x402 payment standards (added in June). XRP payment channels allow agents to deposit funds once and execute repeated payments for services without blockchain recording each transaction. Ripple is positioning XRP and RLUSD as alternatives to the USDC-dominated AI payments market. No commercial customers or payment volumes have been disclosed for the MPP integration.

Why It Matters?

For XRP holders, the developer kit integration represents a key use case: XRP as payment currency for AI agents transacting autonomously. If developers adopt the kit and build services charging XRP for repeated queries, it validates XRP’s utility thesis beyond speculative trading. For RLUSD stablecoin holders, the integration positions the stablecoin as alternative to USDC in machine-initiated payment flows. For Ripple as a company, the move targets the high-growth AI payments market before USDC consolidates dominance. For Stripe and Tempo, the XRP/RLUSD integration expands the MPP standard’s blockchain support beyond early adopters. For the broader crypto ecosystem, the announcement signals that stablecoins (XRP, RLUSD, USDC) are becoming infrastructure for autonomous AI transactions, validating the use case beyond human retail.

What’s Next?

Monitor Ripple’s announcements for commercial customers using the XRP AI Starter Kit with MPP; if major service providers (data, computing) announce XRP/RLUSD payment acceptance, it would validate the ecosystem. Track payment volumes on XRP Ledger for machine-initiated transactions; if volumes spike post-announcement, it signals developer adoption. Watch for USDC-supporting alternatives to emerge from Circle; if Circle integrates with Stripe/Tempo, it would signal competitive response. Monitor the proposed ledger upgrade for adding stablecoins to XRP payment channels; if approved, it would expand RLUSD’s use case beyond individual transactions. Also track broader AI agent adoption; if major AI platforms (OpenAI, Anthropic, others) enable autonomous payment agents, it could drive XRP/RLUSD demand. Finally, watch for other stablecoins (USDT, EUROC) to integrate with Stripe/Tempo/Ripple developer kits; if competition accelerates, it could pressure XRP/RLUSD positioning.

Affected Tickers & Coins: XRP, RLUSD, USDC
