Longtime Chipotle Bull TD Cowen Moves to Hold With a Street-Low $32 Target as Fourth-Quarter Sales Soften

  • TD Cowen analyst Andrew Charles downgraded Chipotle Mexican Grill to hold from buy on Wednesday, ending a buy-equivalent rating he had held since 2019, just ahead of the burrito maker’s earnings report next week. He cut his 12-month price target to a Street-low $32 from $44, and his bear case assumes the stock could drop to $25.
  • TD Cowen lowered its fourth-quarter same-store sales growth estimate to 1% from 4%, well below the 2.9% gain analysts polled by Bloomberg expect, and cut its 2027 projection to 2.1% from 3.8%, versus consensus of 3.1%. “The start of the quarter is showing underlying softness at a time when the business ought to be clicking,” Charles said.
  • Other analysts are trimming too, with Wells Fargo’s Zachary Fadem cutting his target to $40 from $45 on Wednesday and Raymond James cutting its target to $37 last week. Still, Chipotle has 23 buy-equivalent ratings, 12 holds and just one sell, according to Bloomberg data.
  • Chipotle shares have shed 24% this year and trade near a three-year low, making the stock one of the worst performers in the S&P Composite 1500 Restaurants Index, which is down 6.6% in 2026. Restaurant stocks have broadly struggled amid deteriorating consumer sentiment.

What Happened?

Charles expects Chipotle’s third-quarter results to come in slightly better than consensus, but believes medium-term same-store sales forecasts are too high as the brand relies less on price increases in order to prioritize traffic growth. Chipotle has had some success persuading customers weary of high-priced “slop bowls” that its prices are justified, an issue that triggered sales declines in recent quarters. Its latest earnings release showed sales beat expectations thanks to buzz around limited-time offers such as honey chicken and promotions through its loyalty app. Charles fears those initiatives may not be enough to overcome macro headwinds, and he called other sales drivers, such as high-efficiency kitchen equipment and catering, “less proven.”

Why It Matters?

A downgrade from one of the stock’s longest-standing bulls days before earnings raises the bar for next week’s report, especially management’s commentary on fourth-quarter trends. Charles now believes it is more likely that Chipotle will miss 2027 estimates more materially, which would challenge a valuation built on premium growth. Fadem said early-quarter trends are soft despite easier year-over-year comparisons, suggesting the weakness is about demand rather than tough comparisons. The call also reflects the wider squeeze on restaurant stocks as consumer sentiment deteriorates.

What’s Next?

Next week’s earnings report is the immediate catalyst, with investors focused on quarter-to-date same-store sales and any early read on 2027. Charles said he would like to see Chipotle accelerate traffic without leaning on promotions, warning that “this is a premium brand with premium ingredients” that should not be “degraded by doing more value advertising.” Raymond James’ Brian Vaccaro has questioned whether Chipotle could communicate its value proposition more directly. Further estimate cuts after the report would test the still largely bullish consensus.
