A Stablecoin Issuer Just Helped Fund an AI Chip Startup at $6.2 Billion, Double Its 2024 Mark
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • Tenstorrent raised $1.5 billion at a $6.2 billion valuation, more than double the $2.6 billion of its 2024 round. The Series E was led by Trace Capital alongside Innovation X, with participation from Sandisk, T. Rowe Price, Cadence Ventures, Tether Investments and the Agostinelli Group, plus existing backers Ark Invest and Fidelity.
  • The presence of Tether Investments is worth pausing on. A stablecoin issuer with roughly 60% of that market, earning substantial income on reserves while rates are elevated, is now funding semiconductor design. That is a capital flow from digital asset reserves into AI infrastructure that did not exist three years ago.
  • The company chose independence over a sale. It held takeover conversations this year with Intel and Qualcomm while simultaneously courting investors, and chief executive Jim Keller said a May demonstration showing its Galaxy servers running DeepSeek models was the turning point that brought investor interest.
  • The timing cuts against the public market. Tenstorrent’s valuation doubled in the month that CoreWeave’s credit default swaps moved past 60% implied default odds, the semiconductor benchmark fell 16% over eight sessions, and two data centre listings failed or were postponed.

What Happened?

Tenstorrent designs chips it says run certain AI workloads more efficiently, and like Nvidia and AMD sells computers and software rather than components alone. Keller, previously at AMD, Apple, Intel and Tesla, said customers are looking for alternatives, that the company competes on price, and that its diverse customer base includes orders too small for larger competitors. The company has 1,150 employees and customises hardware and software to requirements. On growth he said the mission is organic: you start with $10 million and $100 million, then $500 million. Tenstorrent was founded in 2016 by AMD alumni Ljubisa Bajic, Milos Trajkovic and Ivan Hamer.

Why It Matters?

The gap between private and public marks in AI is now wide enough to be the main thing worth watching. Public markets spent the past fortnight repricing the sector from three directions at once, through a refused IPO, distressed credit and a $1 trillion equity drawdown, while this private round doubled a valuation. Both cannot be right about the same industry. Private marks adjust slowly because they are set by negotiation rather than by continuous trading, which is exactly what made the Firmus situation possible: a company valued at roughly $10 billion in August sought $30 billion in October and was refused twice. Anyone holding private AI positions should treat public comparables as the leading indicator. Keller’s own framing is the most credible part of the case and it is notably modest. Competing on price, serving customers whose orders are too small for Nvidia and AMD, and growing from $10 million to $100 million to $500 million describes a real niche rather than a claim to superior technology. That is a defensible business. Whether it supports $6.2 billion is a separate question, and the investors funding it declined the alternative of selling to two companies that were willing to buy. The Tether participation deserves attention beyond novelty. Stablecoin issuers earn on reserves, so their income rises with interest rates, and that income is now being allocated into venture positions in the AI supply chain. It also arrives as European regulators force platforms to remove non-compliant stablecoins by January 8, which constrains the business generating the capital. For anyone mapping who is funding the AI buildout, add digital asset reserve income to hyperscaler balance sheets, high yield credit and sovereign-adjacent capital.

What Next?

Shipping volumes and revenue are what validate the valuation, and Keller’s own numbers suggest the company is early in that progression. Watch whether Intel or Qualcomm return with an offer, since both have now established interest and a price reference exists. The demand for Nvidia alternatives is real and growing from both pricing pressure and export restrictions, with ByteDance commissioning custom silicon from MediaTek for the same reason. For private AI valuations generally, whether subsequent rounds hold at these levels is the question the public market has already answered for listed peers.

Affected Tickers and Coins: SNDK, TROW, CDNS, INTC, QCOM, NVDA, AMD, AVGO
