Blackstone Raised $8.7 Billion for Energy Transition and Bought a Data Centre Cooling Business With It
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • Blackstone raised $8.7 billion for Energy Transition Partners V, about 55% larger than the $5.6 billion predecessor that closed in February 2025, with nearly a third of commitments coming from new investors. Blackstone committed $150 million of its own capital, around 1.7% of the fund.
  • It could raise because it has returned cash. Blackstone Energy Partners III generated a 33% net internal rate of return as of June 30, and the sale of battery storage business Aypa Power to Brookfield will return more than $2 billion at over six times the investment, lifting that fund’s distributed to paid-in capital to roughly two times. DPI measures money actually returned rather than marked, and a figure of two means investors received twice what they put in.
  • The portfolio describes the real thesis. A quarter of the capital is already deployed across six investments including Flow Control Holdings, which supplies components for data centre liquid cooling, and Dresser Utility Solutions, which makes meters and regulators for gas and water utilities.
  • David Foley, who runs the energy transition business, said the firm likes grid-related investments, equipment with patent protection, and businesses with long-term repair and maintenance contracts rather than those selling only into new construction.

What Happened?

The strategy invests across power plants, transmission lines, equipment manufacturers, service providers and related technology, while generally excluding oil companies. Foley said recent years have brought dislocations from geopolitical events, rapid AI growth and a regulatory environment that shifted with elections, and that assets tend to get mispriced in such periods, creating opportunities. The fund has also backed Kindle Energy and Viridon.

Why It Matters?

Capital is not scarce, it is selective, and this fundraise against the wider backdrop proves it. Private real estate raised a little over $30 billion globally last quarter, the lowest since early 2013, and Two Sigma shut a real estate unit after attracting less than half of a $2 billion target. Blackstone raised 55% more than its previous fund in twenty months. The difference is realised returns in a sector with visible demand, and the evidence offered is the right kind: a 33% net IRR and a DPI near two times are cash outcomes rather than valuation marks, which is precisely what allocators have been unable to obtain across private markets generally. Anyone assessing a fund manager should ask for DPI before IRR. The portfolio is the more interesting disclosure. A fund that excludes oil companies has bought a data centre cooling supplier and a manufacturer of gas utility equipment, and its stated preference is for patent-protected equipment with recurring maintenance revenue. That is an industrial picks-and-shovels strategy serving electricity demand growth rather than a decarbonisation bet, and it is the more durable position. BloombergNEF projects record clean energy additions alongside a net 53.5 gigawatts of new gas capacity through 2030, with data centre power demand potentially reaching five times current levels by 2035. A portfolio exposed to grid equipment and maintenance earns from all of that regardless of which generation technology prevails. Foley’s dislocation argument is candid about the opportunity. Buying when geopolitical disruption, AI uncertainty and regulatory shifts have confused pricing is the advantage of having capital when others are raising it, and it is the same position the Ortega family office occupies in offices and Blackstone now occupies in power infrastructure.

What Next?

Three-quarters of the fund remains to be deployed, and the pace will show whether the mispricing Foley describes persists. The Aypa Power sale to Brookfield needs to complete for the $2 billion to actually reach investors, and that distribution underpins the next fundraise. Watch whether other managers achieve comparable raises in power infrastructure, since this result suggests the sector is where allocator appetite is concentrated. Grid spending driven by data centre load is the demand variable, and BNEF has already revised its 2030 projections up by half in ten months.
