JPMorgan Is Closing a $1.4 Million Turkish Brokerage, Which Tells You It Is Not About the Money
Share on TelegramShare on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp
  • JPMorgan’s Turkish securities unit will halt capital market activities and surrender its intermediary status, pending approval from the Capital Markets Board. No reason was given.
  • The economics are trivial. The brokerage held 67 million liras of assets, about $1.4 million, at the end of 2025, with an operating loss near 7 million liras. For a bank that deployed $230 billion in the first year of a single programme, this is a rounding error, which means the decision is about risk rather than cost.
  • The timing is the context. The Borsa Istanbul 100 has fallen more than 15% since mid-September as a fund scandal froze half a million people’s investments and erased roughly $100 billion of market value.
  • Barclays went the other way. A local unit obtained approval in February to operate a brokerage, so two major banks have reached opposite conclusions about Turkish market access within eight months.

What Happened?

JPMorgan Menkul Degerler AS disclosed the plan in an exchange filing without stating a reason.

Why It Matters?

Surrendering a regulated intermediary licence is one of the quieter signals that market access is deteriorating, and it rarely makes headlines the way an index decision does. A licence carries compliance obligations, supervisory relationships and reputational exposure, and a bank maintains one only while the access is worth those costs. Giving it up in a market under investigation for coordinated trading, where MSCI has frozen index changes pending a review of shareholding transparency, suggests a judgement that the exposure now exceeds the benefit. The size of the business confirms it was not a profitability decision. The scandal’s scale puts the index provider’s action in proportion. MSCI froze changes to its Turkish indexes over possible coordinated trading involving fund holdings in smaller companies, and that looked cautious at the time. Half a million frozen investors and $100 billion of lost market value make it look restrained. The same provider has simultaneously warned Indonesia it may be reclassified to standalone status over opaque shareholding structures and coordinated trading, which is the identical diagnosis in a second market. Free-float integrity has become a question of market access rather than disclosure detail. The Barclays divergence is worth keeping in view before treating this as consensus. One bank applied to enter in February and another is leaving in October, which means informed institutions disagree about whether Turkish market access is worth holding through the current period. Investors with emerging market exposure should note that index classification, brokerage availability and custody arrangements are all part of the same question, and all three are moving at once in Turkey.

What Next?

Capital Markets Board approval is required before the exit completes. Watch whether other foreign banks reduce their Turkish presence, since one departure is a decision and several would be a trend. Turkey has until June 2027 under the MSCI review, and whether authorities address the transparency concerns determines the classification outcome. The fund scandal’s resolution, and whether the half million frozen investors recover access, is the domestic question underneath all of it.
