Netflix Hires the Executive Who Merged Fox Into Disney, Months After Losing Warner Bros. to Skydance

  • Netflix is replacing chief creative officer Bela Bajaria with Peter Rice, who takes the role on October 26 overseeing scripted and unscripted series, film and live events across all regions. Rice was previously chairman of general entertainment at Disney and before that president of 21st Century Fox.
  • The hire follows visible difficulty. Netflix laid off about 1,000 workers, 6% of staff, on Wednesday, its Emmy wins fell to a ten-year low in 2026, recent shows have seen audiences decline in second seasons, and the stock has lost roughly 23% of its value this year.
  • Wedbush analyst Alicia Reese drew the conclusion that matters. Rice’s experience consolidating Fox’s entertainment assets with Disney suggests Netflix may pursue acquisitions, such as NBCUniversal when it becomes available, after being outbid by Skydance for Warner Bros. Discovery earlier this year.
  • The competitive problem is structural rather than creative. Netflix has more than 325 million subscribers and a roughly $20 billion programming budget spent mostly on films, television and video games, while competing against YouTube, whose content costs it nothing because users make it.

What Happened?

Co-chief executive Ted Sarandos said Rice is one of the most effective at-scale operators in the industry, understands what makes stories resonate and has spent his career helping talent do their best work. Sarandos acknowledged at a conference last month that the company is not growing as fast as he would like. Bajaria spent ten years at Netflix, broadened its unscripted portfolio and struck the deal bringing WWE’s weekly show Raw to the service, describing the ideal Netflix programme as a gourmet cheeseburger combining quality with broad appeal. Reese called losing her a big change while noting Rice is well regarded, and described the move as a step forward or at least a shift in direction.

Why It Matters?

Hiring the architect of the Fox and Disney consolidation is a signal about strategy rather than about content. Rice’s defining achievement was integrating a major studio’s entertainment assets into a larger buyer, and Netflix has just lost an auction for exactly that kind of asset. With NBCUniversal potentially coming available, the appointment reads as preparation for acquisition capability as much as for commissioning decisions, and Reese says so explicitly. For investors that reframes the announcement from a creative refresh into a capital allocation question. The Warner Bros. outcome is now testable in both directions. Skydance won that auction and carries close to $87 billion of debt as a result, making its debut on the New York Stock Exchange with a growth story that has to service it. Netflix lost and kept its balance sheet intact while its stock fell 23% anyway. Within a year it should be clear whether the discipline of losing or the ambition of winning produced the better result, and that is a useful natural experiment in a sector where scale is assumed to be decisive. No chief creative officer addresses the underlying issue. Netflix now competes with YouTube and live sports rather than with other prestige television producers, and a $20 billion content budget is being deployed against a platform whose supply is contributed free by its users. Shifting into live sports and podcasts is a response to that, and it is expensive in a different way. Emmy wins at a decade low and second seasons shedding audiences are quality signals, but the quantity of attention available is the harder constraint.

What Next?

Rice starts October 26 and his first commissioning decisions will take a year or more to reach screens, so the near-term evidence will be organisational rather than creative. Watch for any approach to NBCUniversal or other assets, since that is the thesis behind the hire. Subscriber growth and average revenue per user are the metrics that determine whether the strategy is working, given scale is no longer the issue. For the sector, whether Skydance can service its debt while integrating Warner Bros. is the parallel test, and it bears directly on whether Netflix was right to walk away.
