Anthropic Signs $35 Billion Cloud Deal With Nvidia-Backed Lambda — Nvidia Holds the Lease on the Texas Data Center

Pentagon–Anthropic Feud Escalates as AI Policy Clash Threatens Defense Contracts

  • Anthropic has signed a $35 billion cloud-computing agreement with Lambda, a Nvidia-backed cloud provider, to supply the compute needed for Anthropic’s AI model training and inference; the data center is being developed by Hut 8 — a Bitcoin miner turned data-center developer — in Nueces County, Texas, with Nvidia having signed its agreement with Hut 8 a few weeks prior, then structuring itself as the lease-holder on the facility to enable the Lambda/Anthropic deal.
  • Nvidia holding the lease is the structurally significant element: it means Nvidia is not just a chip supplier but a real estate and infrastructure counterparty, putting its balance sheet behind the physical facility to ensure Lambda can offer compute to Anthropic — a vertical integration move that extends Nvidia’s role from “makes the chips” to “underwrites the building that holds the chips,” deepening customer lock-in at every layer of the stack.
  • The deal continues a pattern of Nvidia using its financial strength to directly support AI lab customers, and mirrors the Iren structure from this week (Blue Owl’s $2.4B deal for Iren to buy Nvidia Blackwell Ultra GPUs for a British Columbia campus) — reinforcing that Bitcoin-miner-to-data-center conversions (Hut 8, Iren) are becoming a primary vehicle for rapid AI infrastructure deployment, as these companies bring pre-existing power infrastructure and land that purpose-built operators lack.
  • For Anthropic, the $35 billion deal provides long-term compute supply that is not dependent solely on hyperscaler relationships with Amazon AWS and Google Cloud, potentially giving the company more pricing leverage and supply certainty as it scales training runs for its next generation of Claude models; for the industry, it signals that the AI compute procurement race has moved from “secure GPU allocations” to “secure entire data center facilities” as the competitive unit.

What Happened?

Anthropic signed a $35 billion cloud-computing deal with Lambda, a Nvidia-backed cloud provider. The underlying data center is being built by Hut 8 in Nueces County, Texas. Nvidia signed an agreement with Hut 8 to secure the capacity a few weeks ago, then positioned itself as the lease-holder on the facility — enabling Lambda to offer the compute to Anthropic at scale. The WSJ reported the deal exclusively, describing it as “another example of the company using its financial might to boost a customer.”

Why It Matters?

$35 billion is one of the largest AI infrastructure commitments ever disclosed. The structural novelty — Nvidia as lease-holder, not just chip supplier — is as important as the dollar figure. For Anthropic, it diversifies compute supply beyond its existing Amazon and Google relationships. For Nvidia, it demonstrates willingness to use its balance sheet as a competitive weapon, structuring entire infrastructure transactions rather than simply selling chips — a moat that GPU competitors AMD and Intel, who lack Nvidia’s scale and balance sheet, cannot replicate. For Hut 8 and the Bitcoin-miner-to-data-center sector, a $35B anchor tenant is definitive validation of the conversion strategy. And for the broader AI infrastructure market, the deal signals that hyperscaler relationships are no longer the only path to large-scale AI compute — third-party cloud providers with Nvidia backing can now compete for anchor tenant commitments at the highest tier.

What’s Next?

Watch for the Nueces County facility’s build timeline and Hut 8’s public disclosures about the deal structure in upcoming filings. The key strategic question: does Anthropic’s $35B Lambda commitment supplement or displace portions of its Amazon and Google cloud relationships? Any commentary from AWS or Google Cloud about Anthropic compute allocation will be a tell. Also watch for similar Nvidia-backed lease structures emerging for other AI labs — if this template works for Anthropic, expect Meta, xAI, and Mistral to explore comparable arrangements.
